i just found out that my 95 subby legecy needs a new gas tank and for the price of the labor and not sure of the cost of what the tank might cost to replace. i am looking at around 5 hours of labor to replace the tank, you have to drop the enitre rear end and exhust to just get to the gas tank since it staddles the drive shaft and the diff... the thing this the rear stuarts also also need to be replaced and so looking at the replacing the four couners aslong as long as i am at it.....i paid $700 for the car in oct of 2009. the bad thing is that i have replaced the clutch, lots of bushing for the shifter, the o2 sensor, a tune up, all four couners pads, rotors, and calipers, and both front half shafts for the front alexes. it seems like every orther month ot so i have some really annoying thing going wrong with this thing. there is also some rust every where also that can be annoying also... i am not sure what at this point if i should just fix the damn thing or just say frag it and drive it into some ones garage and strip it for parts....the one thing i am wondering about if the rings might be needing to replaced down the road cause i think when it sits over night and you start it the small cloud of blue smoke if not good......sigh....anyone want locast parts meybe?

How about a fuel cell in the trunk?

Who is to say what ever you replace it with is going to be any better.

Why does it need a new tank? JB Weld is amazing stuff. Or just use a bar of soap like the old guys did.

I would do a little 'shopping' on eBay, car-part.com and the like, to see what 95 Legacy parts are selling for. Then, make realistic assessment of what parts on your car are good enough to sell, add up the potential value of the parts, deduct about 20% and factor your labor (for disassembly) at $0. Then, look at what you might get for the car, in one piece, to decide if it's worth the effort.

I've done this with several old VWs and Porsches. Some were well worth the effort to part out, others were a complete waste of time.

the problem with the fuel cell would be the lack of cargo room then. i need to carry lots of stuff now and then with the car for everyday use. the ohter otptainb would be to just sell but not sure how much i could get for selling it as is though.....right now its looking at options.

How many miles are on it? My dads has almost 370k, and other than burning so much oil it is on its second replacement cat that failed after a year, it still works fine. If its not too rusty id say just fix it.

Is it the tank or the filler neck? The filler neck is a common issue.

It's nickel and diming you now, and that's not going to go away, only get worse.

Time to let it go before you really hate it.

If you part it out let me know. I may take the rear calipers/pads/rotors off of your hands.

In reply to Zomby woof:

Or he's just catching up with deferred maintenance. If he was replacing the same part multiple times or something then maybe...

Honestly, I don't know if someone that buys a $700 car and then doesn't turn his own wrenches is really doing himself a favor. I also know what it's like to live where you can't have / afford a garage, and how much harder that makes it to work on a vehicle, so I feel for the OP on that issue if that's the case.
