The dmv person I spoke to last week was very much wrong, and the NC DMV will not get me a temporary tag. I need to leave my car in Charlotte, fly home and register then come back for it. Is there anyone who'd be able to babysit a corvette for a week?

My friend just drove a imported toyota crown with no plates home from Savannah to Detroit this month. As long as you have the bill of sale you are fine.
Drive home on no plate but with North Carolina purchase documents, proof of insurance for New York and proof of New York residency.
If it was me and I had an insurance card and a bill of sale/title I'd drive home. Even if you got a ticket it'd probably cost less than the round trip to get a plate.
Problem solved, thank you everyone

That and your sense of humor and you will be fine.
(and some wash off white paint so the police will not recognize your Countach (Corvette) when you change colors mid chase).
In some states it is common that cars don't have a plate for a short while waiting for a paperwork shuffle. In a lot of those states, the dealership often slaps a dealer logo plate on the rear of the car.
Something like this off eaby for $10
A plate like this doesn't provide answers at the time of when speaking to the police but rather keeps the police from being less likely to speak to you in the first place.
When you're in Charlotte please let me know I'll come buy you lunch or dinner. I live about forty miles east.

I just checked the Build and Project cars forum. Did I somehow miss the thread?

One thing I do know is that you are better off driving with a bill of sale and proof of insurance but no tag, than you are driving with the wrong tag - even if it came off of a car you own.
Best of luck, Walls!

Agreed. There should have been a build thread BEFORE money changed hands. What us wrong with you?
In reply to John Welsh :
I drove from LA to Dallas on nothing but a generic Carmax "plate." Had highway patrol give me the stink eye around El Paso, but otherwise was an uneventful trip.
If you'd been watching the Z06 for sale you'd know about this :)
IIRC you can drive for 24 hours in CO on a bill of sale.
Sounds like you already have it sorted Wally.
Even so, I will second/third whatever for diving it home with no plate as long as you have a bill of sale and proof of insurance.
When I sell cars here in North Carolina the plate does not go with the car, I keep it to turn in to the DMV.
Either way, next time you are down here around Charlotte, let Duster and I know and we will make sure you get some good barbeque or whatever...
In reply to Dusterbd13-michael :
I have to come through with more time one day. I have to get back for work and my brother is already a bit stressed because some maniac has been driving him around in a bright red car with no tags and watched me be a bit of an ass at dmv. I need to get him home.
No build thread, this was pretty short notice and a fully functional car. It will get some tinkering but it's already more car than I can be trusted with

Don't forget to leave time to get the old NC title notarized, another quirk of the NC DMV

Video or it didn't happen.

I think under normal circumstances you can't not be an ass at the DMV. It goes with the territory.

True story. Last time I was at the DMV, I smiled at the clerk and told her to "have a nice day" as I was leaving. She looked at me like I had grown an extra head on my shoulder.

Did you do the quotes with your hands as you said it?
I don't know how many states allow you to drive without an actual plate on the car, but I know that around here, driving an unregistered car is a misdemeanor, but slap a plate from another car on there ("misuse of plates") and it's a felony.
I'd take my chances on a Carmax plate or something similar. And don't drive like a jerk.

Yea, that won't attract any attention.
