Hey everyone. I'm in the process of changing the transmission on my '85 Corolla and upon seeing the flywheel I was using I'm a bit worried.

I was using a eBay 6-puck sprung clutch and light ~10 lbs CrMo flywheel (shame on me but I did read a majority of positive reviews from various forums). The input shaft for the transmission failed switching from 4th to 5th on the highway around 65 MPH.

The clutch disc and pressure plate surface both appear to be in excellent condition, almost like they weren't even used. The flywheel they came with, however, seems somewhat scored/gouged. I only drove on the setup 4000 miles or less (used new pilot and release bearings), and can definitely feel the variations in the surface with my finger (mostly in the middle and outer radius or friction surface).

Here are some pictures.. (It's been exposed outside on the engine for a week so there are some rust spots, but I figured a surfacing would take care of that)

So can anyone tell from this whether I need a new flywheel or if it's reusable, and why the surface would be so scored/gouged in so few miles?

Doesn't look too bad to me. If you're real concerned you could have it turned, but I'd probably just hit it with the DA and some 120 grit and call it done.

if using same disk that it was worn in with and it was not chatering just put it back on as is. If it was chatering have it surfaced.
