A friend of the families '03 2.0 SOHC focus just took a E36 M3. I haven't had a chance to check it out yet, but someone else did, and they think its a busted timing belt.
I checked the Gates website , and that indicates that it is an interference engine, but they also say darn near every engine is. I suspect that their site is more sales tool that accurate reference tool.
Does anyone have first hand knowledge about these engines?
Thanksm
Disposable. They usually drop the #4 exhaust seat before the belt fails.

Zetec engines are non-interference. I have seen several that lost the timing belt with no problems.
The "while you are in there" list:
New Tensioner (this is a "must do" item) it may have been the cause of the problem.
Water Pump - since you have to remove the belt, etc. to get to it.

The SOHC 2.0/SPI is an evolution of the 1.9 CVH, not at all related to the DOHC Zetec...However, the "while you're in there" advice is still prudent.

This, the number of non zetec foci on CL with either a dropped valve seat or on their third engine is ridiculous.

I failed at reading comprehension. Completely missed the SOHC. Thought most of those had dropped a valve seat and died by now.
Is a single cam Focus still worth the price of the belt?
That was a bit rude, I guess, but the twincam is so much better in so many ways, I'd be looking for an excuse to crush the Escort motored unit.

The Zetec is an evolution of the CVH to the point where the heads and oil pan can be swapped. But they're a divergent evolution, so the point still stands.

Local junkyards were selling "Zetec conversion kits" for $600-800 or so. Zetec, wiring, and PCM. Still cost half as much as a SPI engine, if they could even source one.
The Zetecs basically never break unless you're well and truly stupid, so there's a glut of Zetecs in the yards, so it only made good business sense.
Thanks for the input guys.
Checked it out a few minuets ago, found the tensioner went kaboom and the belt jumped time. If I get the job, I'll be replacing everything.
