It was recently announced that food prices will be going up due to the shortage of corn. Why the shortage, you may ask. To produce more ethanol.

HFCS is just sugar

No, it isn't really. It's extremely processed from a genetically tampered with crop that's been forced on consumers as a sugar replacement. It is not a "natural" food. I ate it without care until I realized I had ballooned about 30Lbs. I've only been off of it for about 2-3 weeks and already down 10Lbs with no other changes.

^I'm not saying HFCS is or isn't a bad thing.......but can you produce some medical studies that show eating HFCS when eaten in the same amounts of sugar is harmful to your body?

If you lost 10lbs in 3 weeks just by cutting out HFCS, you must have been eating A LOT of junk food.

That's the kind of weight loss you see when you do things like eat 500-600 calories a day.

Just because it's genetically tampered with doesn't make it unhealthy. All domestic crops are tampered with.

The reason you lose weight avoiding HFCS is that it forces you to avoid a boatload of highly processed simple carbs that do nothing to sate your appetite. Chemically/biologically HFCS isn't anything special compared to any other fruit sugar. The real problem with HFCS is that it's in everything and that it adds calories without you noticing it.

I make a living off of heart diesease researchers, and while I can't tell you that there is anything wrong with the stuff, I do know it gets a lot of time under study.

To me, HFCS is a food, in the same way that that that "funny uncle" is a relative; just aint right and best avoided.

Have also stopped eating at Mickey D's. WAY too much information with that crowd!

Only good news is red wine is good for ya! Now where did I leave my car?

This is probably off-topic material, but I think the main problem I have with HFCS is that it comes from heavily subsidized corn crops. For all the talk about trimming budgets, I haven't heard word one about trimming corn subsidies.

I won't open that can of worms any more than I have though.

This guy is smart! But if the government stops subsidizing corn then they will probably stop subsidizing oil as well. I'm sure my opinion on that is very taboo on these boards.

Even the grocery store itself is partially made of corn. I'm not so upset to see corn go up, just means people start switching back to cane sugar. Better for everybody's health and good for Florida, at least in a financial way.

Junk food hell, it's in everything. Honey Nut Cheerios for breakfast (you know, those "heart healthy commercials) has it, Welch's All Natural Fruit Juice has it, my crunchy peanut butter AND my "Safeway Naturals" jelly has it for my lunch sandwich (and normally the bread too, but I switch to Dave's Killer Bread last year), the ketchup for my burger, and the chocolate sauce for my milk. Seriously, take a look at labels. It's disturbing how many "normal" items it's in.

Yeah, between HFCS and Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil, you've got the building blocks for 80% of food. It's getting easier, but it used to be pretty tough buying without. Try Adams peanut butter- you'll get used to the oil/pb separation, and now I can't go back to "normal" pb.

Insane is the government subsidies and cheap food policies that play hell with the open market, but keeps poor people so fat they can't pick up a rifle.

Insane is that my grandfather received about half of todays price for his wheat. In 1928.

More accurately, the corn surplus is expected to be lower this year. We won't be running out. It's due to increased demand for livestock, as well as ethanol, combined with poor weather in Argentina. Also, note that livestock and ethanol use feed corn, not sweet corn.

People:

Food prices are going to go up because 1.3 billion people in China have suddenly become high end food consumers. Up until we dropped our gross national income into their laps, they got by on a very limited diet. It used to suck to be born Chinese, not anymore.

Now that they have more money than god, they have decided they like steak and other good stuff. Go figure.

India does not quite have as much cash flow, but since we did outsource the the middle class jobs there, they also, feel entitled to eat as well as we do. Once again, go figure.

Just to bring this back to a car topic, both the mentioned countries are a grassroots motorsports paradise; total "run what ya brung" mentality exist that embraces the grassrots dogma of internal combustion! The original hot-rod mentality from way back in the thrities runs amok in the developing nations with no pollution or safety concerns.

Ya know, they can eat their oil and we'll just burn our food. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

As for HFCS, I personally find that if I consume it, it WON'T GO AWAY. It's like it turns to fat and just stays there. I seriously doubt any real studies have been done on that stuff, especially in humans. Besides the one that shows it won't kill you TODAY.

we're so lucky we can bitch about HFCS. From the beginning of time up until about 60 years ago man was lucky just to keep from starving. HFCS was one of those miracles that has practically eliminated hunger in the US. You don't believe me? Find the poorest place in America and guess what....peeps are FAT!

If you don't like it then avoid it. Just sayin...

In reply to a401cj:

As noted above, it is hard to avoid if you eat any processed food at all. I do my best, though. As my doctor told me: "Try not to eat anything your great-grandparents wouldn't have had available to eat." That mainly means shopping around the edges of the grocery store and having to actually plan and prepare meals.
