If I were in the market for a heavy GT car, sure, but my commute is 45 miles of twisty, hilly backroads- if it were hiighway I'd be right there with you.

If you started with the right car, MAYBE?
Figure a decent car for $5k, $2-3k for hardtop. That leaves you a couple grand for lip, sideskirts, wing, and RPF1s. (The new 15x8 was just announced and it weights 11.3lbs.)
Doesn't leave much wiggle room for suspension and stuff, unfortunately, and no guarantee that your $5k car would look that clean to start with.
This is the starting point i'm drooling over right now: http://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/4616394284.html
I'd agree, the AW11 can probably compete with the MRS in the sub-$5K market on a lot of the same attributes (light, midengine, sporty).
Pros:
-More space (passenger and cargo) for DD use
-Subjectively, I think it's better looking
-Hardtop, ready for the track
Cons:
-Not quite as light
-Not quite as powerful
If you normally carry anything more than your wallet and a pair of sunglasses, you may get frustrated.

There is almost no storage in the car. No rear trunk, front trunk is tiny and mostly full of spare tire, there are tiny glove box like storage compartments behind the seats. It's reliable enough and easy enough to drive to be an only car, but practicality is pretty low.
A Miata is about 10x more practical. You can get a cart load of groceries in the trunk of a Miata. You would have to put the groceries in the passenger seat on the MR-S.
I could do it, but there's just SWMBO and i. If i were a bachelor, it'd be cake.
If you remove the spare, the frunk is actually fairly large from what i'm told. I don't carry a spare in the Miata, either.
Plus, if you have snowy seasons, the MR2 can be scary, even on a decent set of snow tires. The rear will trade ends with the front faster than you realize. Not recommended.

"fairly large" is a relative term. It's not glovebox sized but it's a tiny fraction of the size of a Miata trunk. I should measure it some time but it's hard to measure such an oddball shape. The spare is a space saver spare and it fills the frunk most of the way.

I was frustrated with a 350Z as an only car. I can't imagine a MRS
How are the different Mister Two iterations for we ... vertically blessed persons?
One of my main gripes with 'the answer' is that I hardly fit in the damn thing.

If you hardly fit in a Miata you will have an even harder time in a aW11 or SW30.
What the hell are you people carrying around with you all the time? The absolute most I ever have with me is maybe a lunch box. Hell I can't even remember the last time anyone else was in my car with me. And what is so bad about putting groceries on the passenger seat? I do it every time.
(yes I'm mostly trying to justify to myself that I need an MRS)

Not all the time... but sometimes a passenger seat is not enough room....
400# of pellets......
I am 6"4' and I fit fine in my wife's 2002 MRS. The only uncomfortable thing I find with the cars interior is left silver support leg thing next to the radio. At times it digs into my right shin.
Without the spare in the frunk it has a pretty decent sized storage space. Also I removed the doors to the rear storage area and it greatly improves the storage space usability. Combining the frunk and the rear area I would say it has at least as much space as the NA Miata I sold to buy the MR2.
The Boxster we used to own is the king of storage space for a convertible.
back in 1999 when I bought my Tiburon, I looked into the MR-S. Now that I know more about them, I am sorry I didn't pull the trigger on a new one. I did sort of need a hatchback though

Hey, I carry nothing 90% of the time, but some times you need to move something bigger than a bag of groceries. And if the MR-S was your only car that would be a pain. Now, if it's one of multiple cars it's just great! Heck, I can't fit a cart load of groceries on my KLR but that doesn't stop me from enjoying it. But life would be harder if all I had was the KLR.
