Okay, I know, crappy subject line. Anyway, just got a release stating that James Hetfield's hotrod won the Goodguys’ 2014 Mother’s Custom of the Year.

Oooh... That is beautiful!!!
They had a bare metal article in Rodders journal last year that was astounding. All the money in the world can make some awesome cars.
Roof's too flat, needs a better "crown" and the grill surround is too thick, looks home-made and chunky.
Weird that builders can't really see the flaws until it's too late. I mean, that roof is OBVIOUS and the grill . . . really ? ! ? ! ?
Not saying that I EVER could have BUILT it, but as a design on paper, even I could have improved the two areas mentioned.
For what it's worth, I love the flat roof. It gives the car a certain elegance.

The tear drop on the rear corner windows is throwing me.
James has some nice stuff built. He had a really cool Root Beer colored street rod not too long ago.

I still have the original Creeping Death EP
I want it...more as an art piece than a car but still

They started off with an old Jaguar sedan, but after the body was brought to the De Lay shop for reworking they decided it would be easier to build a whole new body from scratch.
I like the shape but personally don't care for the matte finish brass trim - I think they should have gone with nickel plating instead.
I love it, would gladly stare at it for hours.
That is a truly beautiful car, untold amount of hours on that body. Love the look of the car, but that chrome K&N air cleaner top was the best they could come up with? Really?

Follow the hook. It flows down and into the rear fenders.

Yeah yeah yeah.... It certainly is a pretty piece of work that pleases all my visual inputs, but please, someone take that to a track/drift event and without mercy, whale the art-deco merde out of it...be like seeing a supper model get down and nasty!

ha. That is strangely out of place.
The rest of the car is amazing hand crafted, hand formed, hand shaped amazingness. The engine appears an afterthought, which absolutely does not happen on a Ridler/Mothers contender.
I know huge power wasn't the point, but an off the shelf brand stamped chrome air filter? K&N must've thrown serious advertising dollars as a sponsor. I can't imagine that was a choice made "by design" given all the other details on the car.
That aside, love the car. Love the roof. Love the teardrop windows. I'm glad people with money are paying craftsmen to keep this kind of skill alive.

When I hear those bells on the radio, 95% of the time it is really AC/DC about to disappoint me with "Hells Bells", also, when I finish my truck, it will be "Brian's truck", but if I was making it for a customer, it wouldn't be "Brian's truck"? I presume James didn't turn any wrenches on this, right?
Fantastic. This confuses me though:

Unlike Hetfield’s previous custom sleds, Black Pearl is completely scratch-built. It’s not any particular make or model. It’s sculpted, handmade aluminum body is inspired by the tear drop contours and seamless body transitions of coach built European and American cars of the 1930s. ...
It still blows people’s minds when they ask what body we started with and we say ‘steel sheets.’”
what, you can't make aluminum from steel?
They must have some advanced metallurgy skills!
There ! ! !
Fixed that flat-assed roof. Looks a thousand times better.
Subtle in the small picture, but probably around 0.75" or more in reality.
Want me to correct that goofy grill trim piece next?
all that Matt Brass.. I would have been tempted to go all out and steampunk up the engine...
other than that.. very cool car
