Funny .. I've had this same general type of lugnut on various Hondas that we've owned since 1991. A few of those were very high mile cars, living all their days in WI. Never ran into this problem on any of them, ever. Wonder what they do differently vs. Ford, "Mopar", Jeep, etc.?
To the best of my knowledge, Honda has never used lug nuts with a separate chrome cap on them. One piece, chromed inside and out.
Starting in 2016ish, Honda started putting open ended unplated lug nuts on Civics. I lost a lot of respect for Honda when I saw that.

This has been pretty common across a few oems for a while. My dodge had it and I've ran into many a Ford that had them. I'm not a huge fan of the half sizes, the thought is they fan exacerbate or cause the problem.
I would always forget to get new lugs for the dodge between services and so I just made do. I just hammered the correct size socket on to flatten the cap, then wiggled it up and down to get it off. So I wouldn't zap the nut all the way off just leave it on the stud and wiggle the socket. Usually they would slide on and off after that. On the dodges the lugs are long so I would only stick the socket on about halfway that also seemed to help.
It's changing brakes - I felt as if my feet were in no danger. At the time I had on some gym shorts..and nothing else. It was hot. Temperature hot.

Thanks for clearing that up!
