Thoroughly enjoyed this race....period. Especially Valteri B in the Prancing horse 'B' team keeping it real ....OHY!!!
Keith Tanner said:Pitting Lewis would have put him into traffic with no DRS for a few laps and on a track that wasn't all that easy to pass on. It would have been fun watching him try to regain places in basically quali trim, but at best he probably would have ended up right where he did. If they'd been at Silverstone, I'll bet they'd have done it.
George HAD to pit, he hadn't stopped yet. He'd been gambling on the safety car, Lewis was on a more conservative (normal) strategy. George's strategists have been playing with safety cars this year and doing quite well with it.
In theory they could have double-stacked the pit stops under the VSC, but that would have lost Hamilton a couple of positions. By the time the actual safety car came out it was too late.
Today is the 40th anniversary of the passing of Gilles Villeneuve and 28 years ago Ayrton Senna passed. What would you think these two stalwarts, not to mention James Clark, Jackie Stewart...et al, be their take regarding this 'fashion correct nonsense' !?!?!???
I thought it was really interesting watching all the cars got into turn 17 seemingly slightly hot and just flat NOT TURNING. It appears that the grip available slightly over the edge when you ask these tires to brake and turn is basically zero. Botas actually made it all the way to the barrier, Norris had a bad one, and it seems most of MAGs lost positions where just because the tires where like.. NOPE NOT GONNA TURN!!
Not that he was likely in for a good result but gutted that Norris got hit, glad he somehow lucked out to not collect a wall. Yes He had some room and could of moved further left, but Gasly had more room right and clearly just didn't see him, he was to busy complaining on the radio after having the "my car can't turn" problem for 3 corners. He may have had some damage from Alonso earlier.
That last 16 lap sprint had some potential to be exciting and was, I really thought RIC on Softs could of recovered to 10th but it didn't seem like the softs really had that much of an advantage over the Mediums or even Old Hards. LEC and VER are having some exciting respectful racing.
Did any of y'all see Brundle talking to Mario Andretti, Emerson Fittipaldi, and Zach Brown during the grid walk? Man that was hilarious. Zach Brown promised Andretti he'd get to drive the McLaren car around the track at Austin

Did you forget about James Hunt?

Err..sorry...didn't mean too .....he woulda thrown a major knuckle thump on these chuckle heads ..wink
I agree, there was good racing all up and down the field.....Char really gave it his all during the last 10 laps but just could not get it done before he had to back off and just finish the race.
I think the Mercs will be well back in it by the summer break, they're showing promise.....
George was patient and the safety car came just in time for him as Bottas was closing him down, it could have easily gone the other way like it has in the past where the SC comes out on lap 20 and all the normal strategy guys come in and get hards screwing over the few that took that gamble.
I don't think Lewis is slacking off at all, his start was no different than George's as they both dropped down a few spots as the tire came in and then made them back up. He had more than one opportunity to pit under the SC before the field bunched up but I don't think the result would have been any different (which the team recognized), he would come out behind George and they'd both pass Bottas and that would be it. He would've pushed George but I don't think he'd get past him for fifth.
Bottas is driving really well and I'm glad to see it, I'd still put Lewis and George in my car though.
Red Bull got lucky with the VSC changing to a SC (which seemed to take a long time for some reason) when it did, they were able to pit Perez giving him a shot. If it had changed just a bit sooner the Ferrari's could've pitted and really gone after Max, Christian Horner mentioned this when he was speaking to the Sky guys.
With how strong the DRS could be there was actually some interesting passes made and the racing was good. The track had its designed in "traps" and they deffinitly worked.
In reply to nocones :
I was glad to see that all those "ohcrapitsnotturning" moments ended up with the driver going wide and not just slamming into a wall. Other than the Norris collision, the result was pretty much ideal. I was surprised the Vettel crash didn't turn into at least a VSC.
Overall, the track worked pretty well for some good racing and if the embarrassing show brings more US fans it'll be worthwhile.
In reply to Keith Tanner :
Yea, with all of the doom and gloom from the announcers, one SC period from a decent mistake was impressive. Especially considering the single car SC periods we've had in the recent past. Not a bad track. (Just not a destination track)

The best part of that was that it clearly wasn't planned, Andretti seemed truly surprised and excited. And the way Zac put it, he wants Mario Andretti to drive for him. That will be a great PR move.
My .02
There was some good racing and I did enjoy it but didn't get that jazzed about it.
Verstappen was the only driver who seemed to gel with Willy T.
The venue just doesn't do it for me; once upon a time we lived in south Florida, so there should be some nostalgia but I just didn't warm up to it.
Is it bugging anyone else that the media is acting like this is the first F1 race the US has ever hosted? Like, does COTA not exist?
In reply to Tom_Spangler (Forum Supporter) :
In all reality it wasn't that great of a weekend.. Texas last year was much more impressive. And you know they're gonna do basically the exact same thing next year with Vegas

Make no mistake, we (Vegas) will soil it with douchey hype...........it's what we are good at.

I heard the W series was racing there this weekend, not sure of any other races.
Overall, the race was OK. I blame the F1 cameras for not following more of the mid-field action, especially at the end. But, can also understand making a decision between watching the front drivers and watching the mid-pack that close to the end of the race.
The track looked cool. I think there are a couple of turns that might be widened to help prevent mistakes being costly. I just wonder what they can do about the track and the marbles. It seemed worse here, echoing what some of the driver's said. Maybe what EDT said about it being sandy there when he raced karts had something to do with the marbles being worse. Maybe them combining with the sand, making them even more like hard marbles?
Overall, I think it was a success. Those of us who are more racer based fans probably thought it was a little over the top, but that's what appeals to the everyday person, so if it brings more eyes to F1, I'm all for it. As long as the racing is decent (and I think Miami could use some tweaks), I've just learned to ignore the rest.

There was a GT race on the schedule earlier than the F1.
We made it next to the track on the boat then were promptly escorted away by cops on boats. Beached it near T16 and watched the rest on the TV.
I really wanted to make international TV waterskiing next to the straight but the no fun police put an end to that.

W series like mentioned and the Porsche Sprint Challenge North America

Cota has reached its zenith in terms of what it can do to f1 in the US. Miami can be the new Long Beach of f1, so the hype train has to go full blast. Which means Vegas will be interesting.
Overall, a pretty dull race. The only passing I saw was either DRS, cold tires, or mistake enabled, and since it's not a dedicated race track where other cars can weather the track in, it will never get better.
If Verstappen hadn't made his mistake in qualifying, this "race" would have been over as soon as the red lights went out.

I should be so stoked that F1 is coming back to town (42 years later) but I'm just not feeling it; I'm expecting outrageous ticket prices, crazy traffic (we suck at logistics) and the hype. The hype is what I dread most of all as I'm very much counter culture.
