Showing up and racing is definitely required.  IIRC, when Arrows (or maybe it was Prost?) went out of business they missed a race or two -- then when someone else bought the team with the intention of showing up and racing the FIA said no, the entry had been forfeited by not racing.

Virgin were fined for not going out in the first FP session following Jules Bianchi's accident.

I really thought I had heard that the agreement was that every team shows up for every race and runs both cars every time.  And if I didn't hear that somewhere, I would be absolutely astonished if it's not in there.  Just like the drivers typically have a clause that says that if the car is being driven, they're the one doing the driving except for the handful of pre-agreed tests.

I also agree with this but didn't Hass not run one car in Australia (?) last year. Mick binned it hard in practice and they didn't have another chassis or something like that. I didn't look it up so I many be doing some revisionist history there. Mick was also sore AF so maybe they claimed medical.

I think that was the Saudi Arabia qualifying crash.  Mick was hurt and whomever the reserve driver was didn't drive at all for the weekend so he couldn't take over even if they had been able to stitch the car back together.  I'm sure there are some force majeure clauses to employ, but I'm fairly certain that the teams can't just decide to not field both cars.

I'm kind of surprised they didn't label Max as the "One whose name must not be spoken" laugh

Can someone explain this weekend's format for me? Apparently I missed a sprint race, or something, earlier this morning and there's another one later today that sets tomorrow's grid. Why the three race format, rather than two? What did I miss?

Edit: Never mind, I found an explanation of the format online.

I have to laugh a little at the conditions. When we went to Spa, the race was in mid September. Since then it's been moved up to try to avoid rain.

The race we went to, the weather was incredible mid Sept. And now in late July.....

Well, the Sprint race started out interesting anyway, 4 laps later it was all over, and after 6 laps in the lead Max had a 7 second margin......

Lets see if tomorrow's race is any more interesting - if it rains again, it could be good for the Big Macs.

Lewis' penalty seemed a bit harsh to me.

Young Mr. Pastrami is proving himself useful.

You have to quit caring about first place if you want to enjoy the season.  The rest of the pack is great.

Good lord'n'butter, Max was parked in the victory circle before Lewis was done his fastest lap in fourth.  Almost a second a lap on Checo in the last stint.

Now to the entertaining part- the track specific differences between the different cars are fun.  Leclerc's tires lasted just fine in the cooler weather.  Maclaren really didn't have the speed here that they showed the last two weeks.

George did well on the one stop.  Norris looked like he was headed to the back, but his fresh softs as the showers came was excellent timing.

Other than first place, entertaining race.

That's been the story the last few races. I love that McLaren has been really competitive lately, Ricciardo and Tsunoda lighting a fire under themselves, and Williams being fast in the straights at least gives you something to pay attention to besides the usual podium spots.

You know, if Max wasn't such an arrogant knob, we'd be in the middle of watching something pretty special right now.

I guess we are watching, but we would care a bunch more...

Bummer about Piastri getting taken out after Sainz's lockup. I know in my head it was a racing incident, but in my heart there was some schadenfreude over Sainz's own damage and eventual retirement. What was going on with McLaren's extra stops? Seems like they had trouble figuring out which compound worked best.

I still don't get the Max hate. They're all arrogant shiny happy people and he is doing something really special right now. Chalking it up to culture difference.

OK we all need to start a go fund me retirement account for Adrian Needy

I'm sure we could raise 200 million to get him to retire.

As for the race; I may be an outlier but I found it boring, there were some good passes but no great racing for the top spots.

Agreed on nobody likes the leader unless they already liked them. I appreciate it because I am a life long Duke fan. Everyone hates a winner!

Max and his engineer were hysterical this weekend. He did whoop everyone's ass. It is special to watch but I don't want to see him break Lewis's records. That's a long way away but he is mowing people down. He could be third on the all time list before this seasons over (or within a couple races of it).
I said the same thing about him pulling into victory lane before Lewis finished.
I thought it was a decent race, for 2nd to 20th!

I don't think Max will break too many of Lewis's records,I think he'll pull the plug on F1 after a couple more seasons and go love life a very wealthy man.

My problem, and it's all mine, is how casual he is about it all.  Fake some appreciation for the folks who helped you out, dude.

This year is worse than any since the Schumacher years, and at least he could screw up sometimes.  TV just followed the leader back then, so it was painful.  Like James Hunt said once, "The director is missing a really good race."

During Merc's domination, on any given day, Nico could beat Lewis.  On a hood day, Bottas could beat him.  Red Bull 1, Seb could get beaten, but he was enough of a jerk about it that I secretly smiled every time he baled a Ferrari later in his career.  He never got the hang of the hybrids.

Max has no competition.   I'm not sure anyone can do it as a team mate, because it's to the team's benefit to cater to him rather than his team mate.  I kinda hope Ricciardo gets another shot at him, based on his near equalling Max at the end of his RB days.  Maybe that's the car he needs.  Not likely, though.

Even if it was always fake, which I dont believe, Lewis always was gracious to his team.  Other than Nico.frown

I didn't like the way Max drove before he was given his first championship. Low percentage moves that relied on the other driver to avoid the inevitable accident, followed by him complaining the other driver "turned into me". He had no sense of strategy at the season or even the race level, he just had to win every corner.
Once the FIA gave him the 2021 championship, though, he's become a much smarter, mature and safer driver. I definitely appreciate his sheer speed, but it sure would be nice to see him challenged by someone. .
