I have a Ryobi with a Honda GX that won't start. Cleaned the carb, verified plenty of fuel flowing in. Spark plug makes a spark, but the thing is capital D dead, not even a cough. Almost like there is an interlock issue. If the pump is frozen/failed could that be related? I'm sure this is searchable, I just don't know where to look on the webz.

I love my Karcher, heated pressure washer. The heated ones work like a steam cleaner and are way better at removing undercoating and chassis gunk. Sadly, like most good things in life, they cost more than $400.

Check compression? Electric start? If so put the hose to it and then when cranking it make sure the trigger is pulled and see if it is pumping. Also I read someplace to always start these things with the trigger pulled. Something about easier cranking and prevents damage to the unit. (Mind you this is internet info to take it with that in mind). I do know my Subaru pressure washer cranked much easier with the trigger pulled.

Try a new spark plug and check valve lash. You'd likely feel it in the pull rope if the pump had a problem, though they usually drop right off with 3-4 bolts if you want to try that

Hit it with some starting fluid just to validate the carb. After screwing around with the carb on my Honda pressure washer for a couple of years, I found that the brand new Honda carb was ~$25 (about what I spent on a gallon of carb cleaner) on Amazon and it still runs better than ever 3 seasons later.

I have a Honda with the same issue. Turns out they an issue with a stuck valve. It's a pain to get to, at least mine was, and involved cutting through a thick gasket, potting material, but once there wasn't so bad. You can Google it as it is an issue with these.

I'll second changing the plug. Sometimes they will fire in open air, but not under compression.

Other than that, fire, fuel, compression, at the right time and it should at least cough.

I forgot that I also tried the starting fluid and also nothing. I'll change the plug but I think it is pretty fresh. When starting fluid didn't phase it and I can get a spark when I ground the plug, that's why I started to wonder if there is some sort of a kill switch or interlock. It's been mine, ran fine at last use, and then sat for maybe 6-8 weeks. It wasn't a long time.

If you have spark you don't have an interlock/kill switch issue. If it went from fine to not even hitting on ether I'd be looking for a sticky valve. Pull the valve cover and/or muffler and carb and see if the valves are moving properly.

Isnt this a single cylinder pull start engine? You should be able to easily feel the compression through the pull rope if thats the case. If the engine is spinning too easily it probably has no compression. You can probably try covering either the intake or exhaust flowpaths with your hand while someone pulls the cord and seeing if you lack either pull or push. If you have no compression you probably have a valve/valvetrain issue on either the intake or exhaust side. Verify that the valvetrain is working. If it all looks ok then you probably have no compression due to a bottom end problem and the engine is 'not worth fixing'.

Turns out the exhaust valve was stuck open.  Irma delayed the repair so it is still apart but at least now it will have the compression necessary to get a boom.  Thanks for the help.  I was in "it's a Honda it has to be reliable" denial.
