So last week I was in a crazy accident that totaled my car. A wheel and tire came off another oncoming car and went through the windsheild of my car. My car is now totaled and my father-in-law offered me his 98 Chrysler Sebring Coupe v6 to drive for nothing since it sits and he has no use for it. It needs work and i really dont want the car for my family to drive in so I thought about making it a fun project that I may take and do some crapcan racing with. Has anybody done this to one of these cars and how well do they hold up?
Might be fun! I think I would take some precautions with the transmission, since that vintage seem to be fragile. Perhaps a fluid change and a cooler would help.
holy E36 M3cock, was anyone injured? that's a scary scenario. i have no advice about the car other than perhaps clean it up and flip it for something you'd rather have. as long as it was a gift and not just a loan, and if the F-I-L is OK with you doing that with a gift he gave you.
If I wrecked my car and my fil gave me a car, even a crappy one, and I used it to do something that he will view as a demo derby (like lemons) or basically anything other than cherishing and being productive with, he would probably be extremely pissed. Maybe this dude is waaay more laid back than your average daughter's daddy but I'm thinking you should at least mention to him that the free car he is trying to help you out by giving you is going to be trashed and used solely for your own fun.

Take ownership, thank him immensely, fix it up on the cheap as money allows, offer it back for $0 when you're in a better position to pick out your own wheels.
If he refuses it's return, then ask about the car's potential crapcan fate. Don't hack up a generous gift given with the pretense it would be helping your family.
I am ok just took a hit to the shoulder is all but got a sore neck. I will be ok. My fil was going to donate or give it to a junkyard. Like I said it needs some work. I just thought it would be cool to do something different to an unloved car. I have another car to race with if I decide to go thru with it but I don't fit too well in it. It's a spec rx7 that I bought last year. I think it would be cool to have a fun project that is weird
yeah... I dunno, if it needs much work its probably not worth it. those sebrings are real pieces of E36 M3, there is a reason there are so many that are only 15 years old and they are basically free or scrap price. I did wheel bearings on one once, they use stupid star bits and are designed to be as difficult as possible to maintenance. I did the bearings, shortly thereafter the brakes went out and the ignition quit working, just a money pit. I think for chump car given the cost of safety equipment and entrance fees (which seem like it would be around $2k) you would want to start with something that was 1) decently fun to drive, 2) cheap/easy to fix, and 3) preferably running reliably to start with.

2) If it is a 5-speed it could be pretty fun. If it is automatic, I would either swap to a 5-speed or look for another car. The auto isn't known for reliability and crap-can endurance racing is not the place you want to be performing electronic 4-speed automatic troubleshooting.
