My friend's Protege has finally crapped out so he's buying a new car. He and the wife went with the CX5 because the Subaru salesman was a dick. They view the cars as effectively tied in terms of preference. If it were my money I'd lean to the Forester. Any strong opinions or comparison experience here?
Subaru is in kind of a rut right now, IMO. The only thing a Forester would really have over the CX5 is "true" AWD and the ability to pair AWD with a manual transmission. Otherwise, Subaru's interiors are five years behind the pack, they have poor NVH isolation according to a lot of people, and the new FB-series engines have had a lot of teething problems. The CX5 is objectively much nicer inside, and IMO (subjectively) outside. Gas mileage is a wash between the two.
If Subaru sold the Levorg here I would trade my Fit in on one, but nothing else in their current lineup (BRZ excepted) does anything for me.

If they already bought the CX5, I'd just congratulate them and go on with life. The CX5 is a lot more fun to drive and I prefer the styling. The Forester has more usable cargo space. Subaru reliability is hit or miss.

I think they did okay with going with the CX-5. I don't think you can go wrong with either a CX-5 or Forester.
