I need your expert opinion here. My wife is replacing her '07 Volvo XC90 3.2 with a smaller car but since we still need a 7-seater for weekend, camping, various other road trips I am thinking to replace it with a domestic full size SUV. We've had the XC90 for close to 6 years and it's been relatively trouble free but there are a couple of things that may need some expensive works soon. The tranny valve body is sticking (hard clunking noise when changing gear to R) and the parking brake linkage will need to be replaced soon ($$$ since it'll require seat and interior removal). It will also need all 4 new tires next year. I am hoping to replace it with full-size domestic SUV from the same year with the assumption that it will be slightly more reliable than a Volvo and when it breaks it'll be cheaper to fix and won't require Euro-specific shop. Am I right with this assumption?

Having said that and after browsing CL I noticed that the Suburbans tend to cost more than the Expedition, is that accurate? Is a Suburban more reliable than an Expedition? Any known issues with Expedition circa '07 and '08? Any other option in the $8-9k outside of '07-'08 Expedition that I should consider for a full size SUV? I saw the other thread about the Montero, what was the newest Montero sold in the US? May be a Commander? And before anyone suggest a minivan I can't get one because I am also planning to use the SUV for light off road.

Thanks guys.

I've always thought:

Suburban = Excursion/Expedition XL

Tahoe = Expedition

If you're in the Tahoe, Yukon, Expedition class, you could also consider the Armada and Sequoia,

Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon are always popular around here. Montero isn't really in the same class at all, IIRC. I would also look into Sequoia unless you're hell-bent on domestic. Yeah it's an import, but it shares most parts with the Tundra, and there are millions of those out there over a wide range of years. Sequoia/Tundra parts aren't any more expensive or hard to find as any domestic SUV, at least new (less of them in the junkyard though).

Another one worth looking into is the new Grand Cherokee or Durango. They have the excellent Benz GL-class chassis, but without all the other issues the GL has, and with domestic drivetrains. I thought of all the full-size SUVs I've driven when we were looking, the new Durango drove the best, by far.

Montero is smaller than a Tahoe but larger than your XC90. I wouldn't put adults in the 3rd row but I have put forward facing car seats and kids.

The Suburbans have better interiors, the Expeditions seem to have the better diesel engine for that time period. My friend uses a suburban with the v8 from the 2000's as a mega family rig and tow rig for his big 5th wheel the things are stout. Define what you mean by light off road?

We really like our '08 Expedition limited. Keep in mind they updated (upgraded?) the 6-speed transmission for 2009. The '07-'08 was the first year for their 6-speed. Mine shifts super smooth and aside from the 5.4L spark plug issue, my motor is quiet and strong at 140+ k.
We just found the right deal on the right rig, which is why we went with it. Others I was looking at were the Yukon/Tahoe ('08-'10) and the newer Durango.
