I did mean 7000 ft elevation. Sorry for not making that clear. For you rural folk, big city parking spaces seem to have been designed around a Honda Accord. You can make do with something longer, but it get's wearing.
if you're willing to forego 4x4, you can get a chipped diesel truck for 10K easy. Either the 5.9 or the 7.3. Maybe not so fun to drive until you mash the loud-pedal. just my $.02. You said you didn't need a truck

Anyone have experience with Highlanders? You can get AWD, V6, 3000 lbs. towing capacity and 19/25 milleage for the upper end of my price range. The looks don't do much for me, but I can live with them. Of bigger concern is that I think of them as a housewife vehicle, and as such the suspension might be pretty mushy.

That, and you're supporting marketing that says it's embarassing to be seen anywhere around a Roadmaster Wagon. That alone is enough for me to eschew them.

If you need to tow anything bigger than a Harbor Freight trailer with a lawnmower or motorcycle, buy a full size vehicle with 8 lugs on the wheels. Its great!
My daily driver in urban Milwaukee is a 2002 Ford F250 4x4 Diesel Crew Cab/short box. Before that I had a 1996 Dodge Ram extended cab/long box with a Cummins. Before that I had a 2000 Chevy K3500 6.5 Diesel extended cab long box dually. The dually was a bit of a pain but completely manageable. The others are cake. I can always find a spot to park even downtown near the bars, just takes a bit of intelligence. I won't even take my Corvette downtown and leave it parked on the streets.
I've got a v6 rav4 which is I assume is similar to the highlander. It is a very fun house wife mobile. It's way faster than my miata in a straight line and fun in the snow. It's also really nice to drive. I find myselft stealing it from my wife whenever possible.
The rav4 has about 40 extra horses from its 3.5 versus the highlanders 3ltr.
Whats the FX35's going for in the states?,they date back to 2003 so they should be getting cheaper,its the one I'd like to have.

Why!?! Vehicles have a tow rating for a reason...
I don't know about the fun part but a Jeep Liberty has a 5,000 lb tow rating. Not that I would actually tow half of that with one. Of course a Liberty weighs as much as 3 Roadmaster wagons, loaded with bricks and bowling balls so I suppose it could be stable enough.
We used to have a 2001 Highlander that we towed a loaded down pop up camper trailer with, wife drove it in the rain over wolf creek pass and we didn't die. Transmission puked a year later, completely unrelated.

Um, yeah. The Roadmaster is 6 inches wider, 30 inches longer and 650 to 1000 lbs. heavier. Methinks that's a hell of a difference.

I would say looking at the internetz that the Liberty is no heavier than one Roadmaster. I wouldn't tow with one either, except for maybe a jet ski or similar.
