Still plugging along on the Subaru XT turbo Saints2Sinners rally car; one thing I want to figure out is how I can force as much air as possible through the T-Bird top mount intercooler I'm running. The car's hood already has two square cutouts for air extraction vents approximately above the shock towers (PO said they actually made a reasonable difference) along with the pathetic factory "scoop" that does absolutely nothing to vent air to the intercooler.

Since I recently acquired another clean/unmolested hood, I am thinking of going to town on this one and cutting a bigger hole for the intercooler, and possibly even running a "shaker" style setup just for the fun of it. I'm just wondering if there is anything in particular I should keep in mind to get maximum effectiveness out of the scoop. I intend to flush mount the vents that are already there from underneath (holes are cut, no going back) since I'd think they would help with hot air extraction at a minimum.

So, any suggestions for an effective TMIC scoop feeding a T-Bird intercoler in the desert heat?

STi scoop? Got any under hood pictures of your IC setup?

I was thinking the same thing!

STi scoops tend to go for a premium but 04+ WRX scoops are larger than the 02-03 versions and might come cheaper.

Make sure it's in a high pressure area. Do an aero test with litte strings taped to the hood, the areas where the strings are pinned down are the best areas for the scoop.

And make sure it's as angular and 80stastic as the rest of the car.

Here is an older pic from under the hood. The entire intake has been re-plumbed since this pic, but the IC is in the same place. I'm not sure a WRX/STi scoop will work for me, at least not very efficiently because my IC is much more square in shape. (I'd love to run a WRX IC but the XT windshield wiper motor is in the way.)

I have thought about everything from a simple scoop mounted directly to the IC that I can cut a hole in the hood for, to retrofitting something like a huge Boss Mustang scoop offset to the passenger side (I would fill the useless factory center scoop). My thought is that if I can force enough air through the IC, whatever doesn't exit underneath the car should flow back through the other hood vents, and hopefully I shouldn't see any weird front end lift at high speeds as a result of all this.

Here's another idea: A lot of modern cars are taking cold air from the grille ahead of the radiator. If you make a radiator shroud and take air from the side of it, that's an easy source. So you can forget the scoop, block off the existing vent and run air from ahead of the front grille to a box over the intercooler.

Also this thing is begging for ghetto IC water spray.
