I saw my first Volt on the road yesterday here in Oshawa. It had dealer plates, and looked good: better in motion than at an auto show.

Parked front and center at the Prairie Home Companion show tonight.
Ahhghh! I revealed my hippie-commie-ness!!
I drooled over my first CR-Z in person the other day.
I'll pass on the volt, or any non-LS powered GM offering.

Make sure you get plenty of granola.

also, make sure you close your eyes when smugly telling everyone else how awesome the car is and how awesome you are for driving it..
I parked my Miata next to a CR-Z the other day at the grocery store. I think rearward visibility must be tough in those things. Very tall back end. I've not driven one, but just looking at them makes me wonder why they exist. It is really neither a sports car or a practical economy car best I can tell. I couldn't see buying one of them over something with enough people and cargo space to be useful. Why get a CR-Z instead of a Fit, Fiesta, or Mazda 2? Just because it has a bigger battery so it shows you are doing your part to save the planet?
I saw one out in front of a country club a few days ago, looks damn good for a hybrid car. Much more appealing than a prius or insight.

Drooled or vomited?

The CR-Z definitely looks better in person than in 2D, at least in the colors I've seen it in. I just wish it got better mileage. When I see a volt, all I can think is "what fool would pay that much for that".
The Volt is going to be on the Oshawa press fleet in July – I've got dibs.
The CR-Z was really fun, but impractical – and you're right, you can't see E36 M3 behind you. There's no rear seat, and brrrrr, no bum-warmers (I had it in December). But it's a really fun little car to play with, sure hope they come out with a next gen that fixes the wonkiness.
Ooh, I'm curious. I saw a Volt in a parking lot a couple of weeks ago. I have to say it is nice looking in real life. I might even say it is the best looking alternative fuel car out there (haven't exactly seen a Tesla).

One of the guys in Marketing at my company got one a month or two ago...I swear, I think Marketing guys will believe anything!
I'm picking up a Lexus 200h tomorrow. I kind of like the look of it, with any luck it will be less boring than most of its siblings.
I saw the red Fisker Karma on the road a month ago, now that's an amazing looking car. A neighbor has a silver Volt which is better looking than a Prius.

I didn't even know the Fiskers were on the road yet. They are sexy.

I have actually never seen this
But there are a ton of gay Miata drivers, mulleted Camaro drivers, and valley girls in cabrios.

At various times in my life I have been the owner of a Miata, a Camaro, and a VW Cabriolet. I must be a gay, mulleted, transvestite. Now I just need to get a hybrid so I can add smug granola eater to that.
The volt does nothing for me. Why would anyone pay $40,000 for a GM front wheel drive (neon4891 hit the nail on the head) that get's the same fuel economy as quite a few other economy cars out there. I mean, my 20 year old benz get's well over 30 on the highway and that seems to be what the mags are getting out of them in the real world. Same goes with the pruis.
Well, I'd bet almost nobody is paying 40k for this car. The lease terms are very attractive, the $350 a month that a Volt leases for is a pretty typical payment for a nice midsize car, and when you factor in the $100+ you can save in fuel every month, it becomes a bargain. Even without considering the enviro-cred I can see how it makes sense for a lot of people, particularly those that don't demand or desire much personal involvment with their chosen mode of transportation (i.e. not us).

Enviro-cred? Sure it saves fuel on the back end but what about all the materials needed to make the batteries, how they are mined, and who suffers in the production of? And what do you do with the batteries after they're no good?
False enviro-cred to me. Get a VW diesel.

Fixed that for you.
the batteries and disposal there of is the one thing all the psuedo greenies seem to be missing. Heck, most of the true greenies seem to be missing it too.
Yes, my BMW may use more fuel.. but aside from fuel, exhaust (which is pretty clean) and maintance expendables.. it's major footprint on the earth is over. No more metals will be mined for it's construction, no more glass molded to make the windows, and no more plastics melted to form the interior..
