The Chevrolet Caprice (G8 platform) is coming to you via local law enforcement soon. Hopefully this means the General will make a civilian production version of this. That would keep cost on parts and maintenance down for local governments.

Technically it's not the G8 platform, it's the larger Statesman (longer overall and wheelbase). Similar, but not identical (think Fox Thunderbird vrs. Fox Mustang).
You missed where I call it an awesome car. Don't get me wrong, I would buy one. I'm just missing the days of raw performance vehicles without all the fluff. And I fully understand that this day and age it wouldn't happen. I'm intelligent and realistic. But take a step over in fantasy land with me here. Wouldn't it be nice to get a lightened up raw version of this car? Kinda like the 1LE' of the 80's.
and ummm for comparison lets bring up a 69 gto judge.... 1/4 mile time oh ready a blazing fast...... oh wait ... 14.4..... underrated 370 hp.... and only 14.4 and it wieghed....about 4000 lbs..... ok how about an impalla ss with 425 hp l72 in it did 14.9....... so ummmm how is 400 hp and 13's slow?
The local GM dealer in town got a 2004 GTO late in the model year, just as the new 2005's were comming out with the new engine. Strike one. The car was also an automatic. Strike two. Black with red leather interior. check
I was, and still am, in no position to buy a car like that. The dealer added the scooped hood, spoiler and such to dress it up, but still to no avail. The car was still on the lot about a year ago, with less than 1,000 miles on the odometer.
It was essentially a brand new, six year old car. Even with the automatic, I would have killed to have it. They had marked it down a ton, and I had thought about actually trying for it when it disappeared. They own a couple of more locations, and it had moved from lot to lot a couple times.
I just may look into that....

Gen 1 CTS-V. Stock (with sunroof) mine weighed 3,770 pounds.
Edit: still not light, but well under 4K.
IF I get the job I interviewed at today they have a Catera Sport manual sitting out back of the shop with the typical wasted engine that I could pick up for $500.00 or less, I know what it takes to make a LSx fit under the hood and would LOVE to build a proper V8 Catera to make the 20 mile drive and let the wife drive the GLI and retire the Grandious Caravaner. We will see how the rest of the year unfolds.
I heart the G8 GXP

Wait, they made manual trans Cateras?
I saw a Lincoln LS V6 5spd the other day that made me think twice.
Its actually a 2003 CTS, I just called one of the techs. He said it can be had for "very much sub Challenge money"
I hope I hear good things by friday

Blast, you win.

This. Plus you can pick up a minty '04-05 example for $20,000
As a former Dodge Avenger owner, i have to say i like the GTO styling somewhat, but not as much as the Avenger it blatantly copied. hahahahahaha

Not very up on International car styling, are you? The GTO is just a Holden Monaro, which is a 2-door Commodore, and has had that shape longer than the Avenger of which you speak. (The 1993 Commodore started the shape and the 1997 VT Commodore started the actual stampings used).
JB, if you're going to get a job where your future fellow employees use expressions like "very much sub Challenge money," then I say that's a good job to get!
I own a GXP and it only weighs 2/3 what that one does and has 2/3 the power.
The guys that said a sedan like the G8 can never be a 3000 lb car are dead right - they are lucky to be a 4000 lb. car with all the stuff they need to put in them.
PS - my GXP does the 1/4 in 12.9.....)
I really like the G8 as well. It's really one of the last great Pontiacs, with the exception of Solstice coupe!
And you can count me in on the G8 over the GTO as well, although I don't think the GTO is bad looking by any means. I saw a G8 on a car lot the other day and just stopped and starred for a few seconds. It really was nice looking in a "I have an ax and don't mind chopping off a limb if you don't get out of my way" kinda look.
I can't like anything that weighs over 4000lbs and claims to be a performance car no matter how fast it is.
