Gambler 500 low budget off road rally
Just saw this on a FB post. Have we talked about this here yet? I looked but couldn't find a thread.

For those of you whom the above phrase was not convincing enough, I will add this (one of my all time favorite) photo.
My friend sent me a Facebook link about this. Looks totally awesome. We're hoping to do a "fly, buy, race, sell, fly back" some year soon.
That looks like a fun event, but do people actually write like that? It gave me a headache just reading that mess.
Also, I'm not sure when was the last time I saw a running or even close to being able to be made running MGB-GT for $500.

$1100 ask
If you're willing to swap the OD trans (probably worth 600-700) for a next-to-free- non OD unit, I bet you could get this there. The rust just makes those jumps more exciting!

I'm still trying to get through that article. What the hell am I looking at.
Hong Norr doppelganger team spotted:
Did you ever think you'd see an AW11 and a Samurai competing in the same event?
(One of those is clearly a terrible choice for a number of reasons, but still...)
I don't have a Facebook. Would one of you that does mind filling me in on the details? Like where is the midpoint, rules, etc.?
In reply to SEADave:
Well, there was this one. https://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/201x-classifieds/1974-mgb-gt-no-tile-250-fl/119864/page1/

No real details, aparently this years event just happened. Its in Oregon, weekend long, party at the 250 mile mark, find GPS waypoints, ~$500 or ridiculous car, no entry fee, just fun.
I suggest a GRM board sub-competition for Fly, Buy, Finish and Drive Home. Extra points to be awarded for epic Adventure threads. Double bonus points if you then bring car to the Challenge the same year.

245 turbo wagon was the first thing that came to my mind. Should still be fairly solid even with a million miles on it, and cars don't rust much in the PNW.
PSA: Volvo RWD turbos have a factory LSD. Well 2xx and 7xx do, not sure about 8xx and 9xx.

I don't think I've ever seen one with an LSD. Some of them had an auto locker in the diff (only works under 25 or 30 mph, IIRC), but that means when you're on the throttle at low speeds, the diff is outright locked. Fine for an off road race though. Many were open diff though (including several I've had person experience with, a 740 turbo and a 760 turbo, both wagons).
In reply to Trackmouse:
I've got a buddy in Bend and I'll live in Portland soon enough for the next race. Maybe GRM should put a team together.
In reply to rslifkin:
Hmm, I suppose I could be wrong.
One of my closest friend's whole family are Volvo nuts, I got that info from them. None of their 7xx turbos never had any problems making "11s".
In reply to HappyAndy:
They very well may have had the lockers. From what I know, they were relatively common on the turbo cars, especially in snowy states.
My wife showed this to me yesterday and said we should do it! the only downside is we are 30+ hours away.
