Going against other opinions (sorry Hess), I found a 22re out of an 85 Celica with 92,000 miles to replace my current 87 4Runner's engine with 300,000 mi and a leaky head gasket. The owner must have loved it because I saw an oil change receipt from a local Toyota dealership that wasn't 3 months old.

Anyway, I want to replace necessary things while its on a stand. My plan is as follows:

Oil pan gasket

Valve cover gasket

Front main seal

Rear main seal

Timing chain with metal guides

Oil pump

Cap

Rotor

Plugs

Wires

Replace all vacuum lines

I'll be checking the front cover for the tell tail grooves of a worn timing chain, and if they are present, I'll replace the cover, too. The engine is complete, so I don't think I'll change the intake or exhaust gaskets.

I want to paint the block. Its cast iron and an rusty were the paint has fallen off. What do you recommend? Does POR-15 make an engine paint?

Anything I'm overlooking? What about a pilot bearing? I'm running a manual trans.

Check around but I seem to recall that there is a way to cram the early double-row timing chain under the later, single-row cover.

Also, order an oil pump for the uber-rare turbocharged version from the trucks (or was it the 4-runner) It's a higher volume pump, more oil flow never hurts.

Pull the EGR passage cover off the back of the head and make sure it isn't blocked up with soot, you can't get at it with the engine in the car.

If the front main seal has worn a groove in the pulley, there is usually enough depth in a 22R cover to just drive the seal in a bit deeper and get the seal onto a fresh area of the pulley.

If you've got the engine out, I'd put a pilot bearing in at a minimum, for the cost I like to put in a clutch and throwout bearing as well, I hate pulling transmissions, doubly so when there's a transfer case hanging off the back.

For cheapo, high-temp engine paint, I've used BBQ paint in the past, works good for engine blocks.

That's all I got.

BTW, the oil pump, timing chain and possibly the front cover will likely come from these guys:

Engine Bldr

Would I be better off just buying the few gaskets I think I'll need locally, or get the kit for $66.00? I'll call tomorrow to find out what" complete" means.

No one else ever refreshed an engine before? C'mon, throw me a bone.

Not doing rings & valve steam seals to get compression back? Not doing main & rod bearings?

As of now, no. I might do the mains once I get the thing opened up.

I say leave well enough alone on the rings and bearings, 20r timing chain setup and for the love of god get a camshaft. Best $100 you can spend on a 22re

If it's EFI, I would go ahead and change that intake gasket.

With <100K, that thing's not even broke in yet. Just put the engnbldr metal rails in there, new front oil seal and call it good.

POR-15 makes awesome engine paint. Have used it on many engines.
