so the new shop truck has a stick. i want an auto, mostly because my knee isnt getting any better.

i plan on a 700r4 or 200r4 with lockup torque converter.

shop truck is a 64 el camino, soon to be EFI.

has a very mild (or possibly stone stock with an aluminum intake) 350 in it. will be doing minor towiungof 4X8 trailer, but mostly just what fits in the bed. may see autocross or dragstrip if i get bored, but not often.

from what im led to believe, the 4.3 and the v8 trannys are essentially the same, and interchangable. is this true? also, anyone have a list of possible donors for when i go to the salvage yards? plan is to get a good used one, and when i kill it have it rebuilt by a local tranny place. or by me. dunno yet.

anyway, please impart the wisdom, oh GRM collective.

The 700 is going to be easier to find. At least around here good 200R4 cores are harder to come by.

You know, if it was mine, I'd find the 7 hole BH pattern 4L60E, typically your later model 4.3 V6's, and do the near-backyard, free, and no computer needed manual VB mods. No way would I run even the old 700's, given how much "better" the 4L's are.

To answer the other question, the only difference between V6 and V8 models is shift feel and number of clutch plates in the drums. Everything else is the same.

the 700r4 has a deeper first gear, but the 200-4r has more potential when built up.. the 200 is shorter than the 700 and weighs a little less. yo uwill probably be able to use your existing driveshaft and yoke with the 200, but the shaft will need to be shortened 3" or so for the 700 but the yoke is still the same.

if you go with the 700-r4/4L60, then get the newest one you can find.. if you go with a 200-4r, then get one out of a Monte SS, GN/T Type, or 442.

any durability or drivability differences between the v6 and v8 700's? and what list of stuff at the yards should i look for with a 200/700?

also, the 4l60: doesnt that require a computer to shift it in full automatic mode?

Why not install one of the old, cheap 4-speed manuals?

the 700r4 was renamed the 4L60 for a couple of years when GM decided that it wanted a different naming system, and they did a few upgrades.. then starting in 92 or so they started phasing in the "e" version that had a computer controlled valve body- the way to tell which one you are looking at is that the "e" version doesn't have a tv cable that goes up to the throttle body and has a bigger plug in the side for all the solenoids and other wizardry inside the pan...
