need to know if a 2004 buick rendezvous 4t65e trans will work in a 2005 same. both 3400 v6, both fwd.
i'm getting conflicting info, and need a definitive answer from someone who would know better than myself.
when i search car-part i get only 04's when i search for an 04 and only 05's when i search for 05. but i have a guy i know telling me both years have the same 2 trans codes - one for fwd and one for awd. both have internal neutral safety/PRN selector switches. at some point they changed from external but these are both internal.
so i need to know if i can just plop the 04 trans in the 05, or what might need swapped over. the tranny cooler line rusted out, and my wife continued to drive it several days before realizing she was leaving blood everywhere she parked. i fixed the line and filled but the damage has been done.
the reason this is important, is that we bought back my mom's rolled 04 from the insurance company, verified driveline is still good, and it's in the garage ready to tear apart.
if they are from the same trans family and the electrical connectors are the same, it should work... might have a different final drive ratio and torque converter or something like that, tho.
both are 4t65e from identical vehicles except for 1 model year different and paint color.
i recall once i put a 91 4t60e in a 94 car and had to switch pins around on the trans plug, but that was in the infancy of the solenoid controlled trans and i knew they were slightly different.
I should be able to verify this when I get to work later today.
Looks like 04 and 05 trans are different. My stuff doesn't say what is different about them, just that they different.
Yep, '04 is '04 only and '05 is '05 only. The difference is usually in the programming and computer control. You might be able to install the '05 trans and have a dealer reflash the ecu as an '05, but that's a lot of work for a crap shoot.
they appear from parts searching to have a separate trans control module. and that the module is the same from 04-05 for the 3.4
i would think at worst the control module might need changed with the trans and possibly programmed?
i'm torn between stab it in and try it and risk it not working right, or trying to off the 04 drivetrain for enough $ to buy a used 05 trans. then i have a hard time trusting a junkyard part.
My internal trans part lookups don't show any difference after 02. Not saying there isn't any, but trying to get good info is hard.

Nope. The 3.6L models have a separate TCU, but it's all in the ECU in the 3.4L models.
see, that's how hard it is to find anything online about these things. i appreciate everyone's help.
we picked up a grandma fresh 87k mile 1992 olds 88 royale for temporary wife driver duty until i can get this buick figured out.
