Do any GM RWD transmission bolt up to the LS4, or is an adapter plate the only way?

Apparently the transmissions that are used by the Isuzu 3.2 v6 in the rodeo, troooer, amigo, and passports work with the ls4. From the 1 forum post I found about it. And that those are the only rwd transmissions that work without an adapter.

Lots of transmissions bolt up, anything from the 2.2/2.5l 4-cylinder jeep, s10, or camaro, any 2.8/3.1/3.4/3800 S10 or camaro as well.

The problem is that the flywheel that fits in those transmissions is small and the oil pan is wide, so a starter right next to the oil pan won't engage. Also, none of the transmissions have provisions for mounting the starter, and neither does the engine.

The most reliable looking alternative I have found is to get the adapter from speedway for 60* to v8 bolt pattern, then add the 3/8" crank flywheel spacer for the flat flywheel to old transmissions to make up for the adapter and the shorter crank.  Bolt the works up to a 60s 6cyl bell housing with provisions for the old 3-bolt starter.  That should get you in business.

Alternatively, i think i have an easy way of mounting a starter.

From what it looks like, the SBC/LS dowel holes are there and the locations for the bolts are dummied out.

Ooops, I forgot that the starter is on the FWD bellhousings in a different spot. I asked because I saw a 100K LS4 for sale locally and had visions of an easy, aluminum Challenge engine.

Have you picked out the chassis yet? If not, is a mid engined or FWD car an option?

If its cheap enough it could be worth it for the 243/799 heads.

It's not that the starter on FWD bellhousings is in a different spot, it's that the LS4 mounts the starter to the transmission.  The normal FWD starter location is all ate up with oil passages on the LS motor.  No room on the left, no room on the right.

Trivia:  One of the original design criteria for the LS1 was a valley mounted starter like the Northstar.

And Northstars, another transverse V8 with the Metric bolt pattern.
