ok, im looking at motor options for the challenge truck. ive heard tales of hybrid 60 degree v6 camaros running pretty good. they call a hybrid a RWD motor (3.4 in my case) with the aluminum FWD heads and TPI intake setup. im considering building a camaro motor like this from junkyard parts, and dropping it into my 87 S10. my questions are:
1. what heads? ive heard everything from 3500 series heads, to 3100 heads. its gotta run pump gas and use my S10 headers (with minimal mods to the headres)
2. what intake manifold? and will it clear the accessory drives?
3. what cam?
4. what kind of power?
im thinking that somewhere around 200 RWHP in my 5 speed, 3.42 geared, 2900LB truck should be good fpr autocrossing and daily driving. figure in the 20% loss for drivetrain, and that comes out to right around 250 at the carnk, on pump gas. porting and polishing are easy for me, but im trying to use a low milage 3.4 camaro block form a 94 that i got at pull-a-part for cheap. ive only got about $500 left in the budget for the motor, so thats why it all has to be junkyard sourced.
thanks
Michael
look at thirdgen.org in the V6 section,
your camaro 3.4 block
procure a 3400 and use top end AND pistons
use 2.8 front accessories/flip intake around
port work to heads
3500 intake plenum
good cam
fun.
i've picked up complete low mile 3400's for under $200
anticipate measuring pushrod length and ordering properly sized units.
forego the kids at thirdgen and go to www.60degreev6.com
hmm...
now ive got some shopping to do. with the 3400 stuff, compression should be around 9.6, right? which seems low enough with aluminum heads to run the cheap gas. even better.
what kind of power guess do you think?
Michael
there is a 3500 on ebay right now for $199 BIN if you look up lkqonline as the seller.
could take a whole 3500 and just make the truck obd2 with the proper wiring harness and a diagram/patience.
what about the supercharged bonny motor?
Check out the StalkerV6 website for a little inspiration -- they're using S10 donor parts to make a 7-esque clone.........the SuperStalker uses the 3800SC motor.

That sounds very cool. Certainly worth investigation!

I was gonna say, sounds like a lot of jacking around when a complete L67 is so cheap.
