Is there any actual difference between the 2? I'm looking at both 1500 series trucks, I know the parent company is the same. But I don't really get why they would compete versus each other. Bottom line, I'm looking for a 4x4 truck, not going to buy a ford or dodge, toyota doesn't make long bed anything.

Some GMC's have a nicer interior IMHO. But no, there really isn't a difference.
Mine is a GMC, so yes, GMC's are better.
Seriously, there are some exterior trim differences, and while the interiors may very well differ in some years or trim levels, my Sierra has an interior that is identical to a comparable Chevy.
I like the looks of the GMC trucks better than the chevy's. I think any substantive difference between the two was gone in the 60's-70's.

On the newest models, the GMC's are about one trim model above the equivalent Chevy. They're priced about 5-10% higher, too.
I looked at a 2011 Chevy Silverado 2LT. It was fine for what I needed without stepping up to the Jimmy. But now mt wife wants me to keep my old truck for when I need a truck, and she wants an Enclave. It is way nicer than the Traverse, and even nicer than the Acadia. But because of the cost difference, we'll probably end up with a Traverse. Almost as nice, but much cheaper.

It's like asking which twin sister is better.
I know we're talking Silverado vs. Sierra...but the SUVs mimic them very closely. I just bought a used Tahoe and when I was test driving it I parked next to a Yukon and except for the color and front grill (which I feel is ugly on the Yukon) they were identical. The Yukon was available with the 6.2 and the 6-speed earlier and the Tahoe has never had the option of the 6.2 with AWD that the Yukon Denali has.
They come down the same assembly line 1 1/2 miles from where I am sitting. The people I know that work there say that there is no difference.
I love it when people try to convince me that GMC's are "made better." They look like they want to fight when told they're the same trucks.
I bought my Sierra purely because I like the looks of it better than a Chevy.
I was surprised GM dumped Pontiac but kept GMC. In all my wisdom I would have done it the other way around.
You could get a 292 6 cylinder in a GMC truck in the 60's, which was not available in a Chev. I think that was the last significant difference, other than the shape of the headlights.
because I'm looking for a chevy/gmc truck, the price for a nicely equipped long bed 4x4 "work truck", with discount is just over $24k for the 2500HD, its actually $2k more for a chevy branded truck.
I've always gone for hte GMC because I liked the grille/lights better than the chevy. THat's about it.
Chevy vs. GMC is really just a grille option. Seems dumb to maintain an entire brand just to support a grille, but there you go.
In the 60-70s, GMC had nicer interiors a d engine options chevy didnt (305 v6, etc). Other than that, just pick the one you like.

According to Edmunds, both start at $20,850. Maybe options pricing is different, but there isn't anything else I can see.
And I suspect one of the reasons GM kept GMC alive is so Buick dealers would have an additional income stream. I believe most Buick dealers also sell GMC, so I guess GMCs are really Buick Trucks
... guess it's kinda like when I worked at Trane making small commercial A/C units... from time to time we'd have a special order which meant instead of putting a Trane sticker on it we put an "American standard" sticker in it's place... apparently that sticker was worth a few $100 over the Tran stickered model ;-)
The kept GMC alive because it has a following among consumers. My peope belive the "professional grade" hype, literally.
Consumers believe what they want to believe. Once they have an idea in their heads it is difficult to remove it.
I can only comment on their commecial trucks
The big isuzu made box trucks
GMCs were the nicest to drive with a nicer interior and options.
Isuzus were next on the list, with very little difference between them and GMC
the Chevy version was the bare bones truck. Nothing you wanted to spend time in

Don't forget your dealer network. Many that carry Cadillac don't carry Chevy.

GMC built the Syclone and Typhoon, so yes GMC for the win.
Maybe I am stuck in a 1994 high school fantasy...

GM sells a lot of big trucks branded as GMC's. like dump trucks and school busses and what not.
the people that make their livings with those trucks want a matching pickup for daily use.
that, and this gives GM a way to have Buick and Caddy dealers be able to sell highly profitable pickup trucks.
I think it was 2007 that GMC was GM's second best selling brand behind Chevy
Is it true that if you combined Sierra and Silverado sales numbers it would beat Ford's claim that the F150 is the "best selling full-size pickup X-years running".
