The other day the alternator in my 192k mile 03 Suburban 2500 6.0 decided to not charge for the first five minutes of my drive.  It later came back online but certainly the writing is on the wall and I use this truck for long towing so it needs to always work.

Looking at Rock Auto the options seem to be:

1. AC Delco Gold new: $126. Other brands are available but I tend to gravitate to AC Delco for GM cars.

2. "GM Genuine" remanufactured: $123+$40 core that I need to ship back to them.

3. Junkyard alternator roulette, these are everywhere and cheap.

I've never had an alternator go bad and remember reading here about how some remans are crap, etc, so, anyone have any experiences with these, or other options to suggest?

AC Delco is what I put in the Suburban. I've about quit buying rebuilds. I'm pretty sure most of them are done on a dirt floor in Pakistan and the rebuild part consists of a set of brushes made out of charcoal and a shot of spray paint.

$126 for a new GM is cheap.  Pull the trigger.  Don't have to worry about paying a core fee up front or packaging and sending it back.

No-brainer.  Keep the core to use as a motor in a pit bike or something.

I put the AC Delco in my GMT400 maybe four or five years ago. No issues since. I wouldn't consider a reman.

Maybe just a coincidence but the alt in my truck went south while I was out of town and my wife was driving.  A friend picked one up from the dealer and got her on her way.  15k miles later (a few weeks ago) i pulled it off because it was squeaking and pulled it apart.  After taking the case off that had a "refurbished" sticker on it (seriously? Ford sold me a refurb at the same price) I find shot bearings and brushes that one is fine and the other is worn almost to the wire.

I was about to buy the new ACD alternator when I checked the RPO codes for my truck, turns out I have the 145A alternator not the 105A, so that option is out as ACD doesn't make that one new, only reman.

My new choices are Pure Energy, TYC, Remy, WAI global, BBB industries or DB electrical.  Any experience with those?

No experience with the alternators but I have bought a few window motors/regulators from WAI global and they have been fine.

In the philly area, go see Henry.

this place rebuilt a alternator for my old jeep and wired in a ford truck headlight relay to make my hot start issues go away.  They will rebuild your old part for you.
