If you drive one you will fall in love. They are very emotional cars. You'll love it until you hate it.

When I bought my R53 I planned ahead for it's issues and am willing to live with them, you need to be of the same mindset with the TT. I have a total of one run at an autocross as my experience with them, but it was a fun car and cornered pretty flat. I was just thinking the other day that you never see them anymore out of captivity.

It's not hate, they are just reporting facts.

I've never had any Audi experience, but everyone of those issues you guys have mentioned I've seen first hand in the VW world. The intermittent windows & doors are the most frustrating things.

Plus I have stood by and watch 2 of the Beetles burn right up with no warning to the occupants. I'm presuming it's the brake master leaking someone was mentioning.

Not to beat the 1.8t too much, but a friend with a Jetta said it was the happiest day in his life when someone finally bought it and drove it away. It was ALWAYS broken, mostly electrical. Just like the 1.8t Audi's, it had check engine lights all the time.

Or as a friend with a shop says, Audi's come from the factory with the check engine light on. When he sees one pulling up out front, he grabs his scanner before they even get out of the car.

VAG isnt THAT bad but my Disco was way more reliable than my b5 s4, depressing but still amusing.

My VW has been the most reliable car I've ever owned. Even more so than my Acura. It's been far less troublesome than our R53, which was purchased about the same time (both are 2003s). Some of curtis' comments are exaggerated or wrong. The front suspension is pretty cheap. It's a common upgrade for Mk IV owners to use TT bits as the TT has better geometry. The poortex kids wouldn't do this if the parts were excessively priced.

There was a recall fix for the sunroof drains. It takes about 5 minutes and the only tool required is a razor blade...

I won't say the cars are trouble free and you won't swear at them from time to time, but anymore I think you'll do that with any car. I agree with racerdave's comment about going into it with the right frame of mind.

beetles burn from using Chinese radiator fans too, and since they are easy to break and factory ones are expensive it's not surprising it happens occasionally.

How does the fan make them burn? In both cases there was fluid involved. I thought it was something to do with gas lines, but it could just as easily have been brake fluid.

My Volvo almost burned due to the fan; the fan locked up and burned the insulation off the power line feeding it. There's a ton of current going to an electric fan and the fuse and wires to it are sized appropriately. So a locked up fan could very easily start a fire.

Once it's started, other fluids can come into play to feed it.

On the theme of fire, watch the undertray on the TT. If you have an oil leak it will just settle there and build up over time mixing with dust and dirt to build up a thick layer of fire waiting to happen. The TT probably isn't the only car to have this concern, but it's the one that I've owned that has worried me the most. In related news, I should be better about fixing oil leaks.

Yep. I replaced far more non-wear items on the Integra than I have on my TDi over half as many miles. Oil pan, RR caliper, radiator, and the blower motor crapped out just before I got rid of the car. The engine ran great, but everything else was seriously falling apart. The VW has been far more durable.

Trust me, I bought the VW expecting to be trading it in for an RSX within a few years (before the warranty ran out). 10 years and 303k miles later, the car has been as reliable as gravity.
