If it is of any use, I really like welding once I've had a couple beers
Perfect, there should be plenty of beer and welding in the parking lot so your covered on both counts. I am good at destroying things after a few beers and there should be lots of stuff to tear up as well.
Now that you are using a firebird for your sawzall hotel parking lot beer fueled build, this will be the most Florida thing that has ever Florida'd
I can't wait to see this. I am thinking of a Miata "ghettocet" build myself, and just like you, as I searched craigslist I found them all to expensive for what they are. Got to thinking about other cheap rwd cars and remembered the early 90s v6 camaros. I was searching for a picture of a stripped unibody so I could make a plan and then stumbled upon this build! At my favorite site and basically my homepage already lol.
Anyways I'm super excited lol

I'll be traveling down from Sandusky. My buddy who has attended the past couple years with me will not be able to make it since the date change to Sept. Let me know if you want to tag along.
I plan to be elbows deep in this TrailerParkCet build.
Score! The $50 each corvette wheels from car-part.com came with good tires. Maybe I can sell them to recoup some budget.
I don't wanna dampen your enthusiasm, but i would be careful about recouping with tires. Since 4 tires (and other safety items) are free, they specifically say that the free items are not to be used for budget shenanigans. The example they use is selling all the brake hardware and then buying "budget free" ones back.
Now, you only get 4 free tires, so maybe there is an argument in your favor if you plan to compete with 6 or 8 tires.
These cars are camber challenged from the factory. You can pick up about 2 ~ 3 degrees if you grind out the mounting holes for the lower control arms and move the arms as far outboard as possible. You can elongate the upper control arm mount holes to move them inboard.
For the rear springs, you can probably pick up a pair from a junk yard V6 car. Use those for the drags and your stockers for the autocross. You can easily swap them out in the pits.

Paint it orange and green and it becomes "The Gatorcet"
Just registered for the challenge, next step is ordering the cage. Then I guess its hurry up and wait since nothing is happening till the parking lot.
Provided that I don't have a pressing need to fix my own car after a race 2 weeks prior to the challenge... I think I want to get in on this. It sounds like my kind of party
I should be able to offer "refreshments" and food to those participating in this endeavor as well as to support with runs to the parts store and photo evidence of the events that take may or may not take place.

I don't see any need for explanation, plenty of us perfectly normal people have a mullet wig. right? right?
