Not sure what "needs body work" means with only one picture, but is this a dumb idea?

What can you guys tell me about this vintage model?

I can tell you that the seller is sick of the car and can't quite muster the enthusiasm to write a good ad. I bet you can talk them down.

Looks like something isn't 100% along the bottom edge of the door and the rear wing. It might be a little rust starting, but it doesn't 'look' too bad. You won’t be able to tell unless you look in person. I've met people who think a car is mint because you can't see any holes from 10 feet away despite the fact it's riddled with rust, and others who think a car’s destined for the scrap heap as there are a couple of bubbles on a wheel arch. "Needs bodywork" is so subjective that you have to see in person.

I know nothing about them, but they sure look cool. It has to be worth a look.

These love to rust. Check the rocker, trunk (under the rubber mat), floors and front fenders. The carbs also go bad on the gasoline powered ones. Can be a pricy to get right.

Otherwise pretty easy to work on. They aren't worth a ton of money so you can probably beat down on that price. Make sure the rear tail lights are intact - the lens are pricy to replace.

That is pretty top dollar for that car. The mercedes aren't worth anything. I think someone mentioned rust, mercedes, BMW, and VW all had a running contest to figure out whose car can rust out quickest. If mercedes had used thinner sheetmetal/undercoating most of these car look like swiss cheese. One member on another forum actually was able to jack up his car under the rotten rockers and the undercoat was what held it together.

Second this; my 280 looked solid but you were jacking up on the layers of carpet. Lol.

That's not a C model, it's a standard saloon. I'd be very suspicious of a seller who doesn't know what model car he has.

Previously mentioned areas that don't look right, as well whatever that is stuck to the trim at the bottom of the front fender, and the rust on the front bumper.

Let me ask a dumb question, 'cause I too love the way these look. If you found one that was reasonably solid but, say, the carbs were shot out and expensive to replace.....

Is there a small block precedent? Anybody LS'd one ore 302'd one? Any odd space limitations or anything?

Seems like it would make a neat driver that way.

Let's see - 45 year old car near the ocean and up north with visible rust along the bottom of the doors. I'm pretty sure I know what "needs body work" means..... Look closely on a lift before you buy. Suspect the cancer is terminal.

Similar car here for condition/price comparison.... http://grassrootsmotorsports.com/forum/build-projects-and-project-cars/resurrecting-a-1973-mercedes/65576/page1/
