Okay, I may have a free car coming my way. When I asked how much it would cost, I was asked "How much will it cost to have it shipped here?" when I asked, again, how much it would cost, I was told that it could be mine for the cost of transport. As much as I would like to fly and drive, the owner's son believes that it would require too much work to make it across the country, so he won't allow me to have it if that is the plan.

So, if you wanted to have a reasonably valuable car shipped cross country, but didn't have the time to drive there and back with a trailer, who would you use? Do they require that fluids be drained? I have time, so slower is fine, and I will gladly trade cost for speed.

Oh, and I believe the colour is Peru Red, though I don't know if it is factory or not (yet).

I used uship when purchasing a car from a GRM'er last April, North Nevada to Socal. You post what it is, where and when it is to be picked up, where and when you want it delivered and transporters will place bids. There's a feedback system similar to ebay and you can communicate with the transporters to feel them out before accepting a bid. Price will vary depending whether or not it's a common route or one that they can piggyback another job on along the way. If you are in no hurry that gives them time to work some other deals and should lower your cost a bit more. Worked out great for me, car was loaded with spares inside, tank had gas in it as well as the other fluids and such.

Can we put a star in your reasonably priced car?

Don't know how Clarkson feels about a 912E, since it was never sold outside the US. I need to find an old 911 to make sure that I have enough head room, since it has been WAY too long since I have sat in a factory interior 911 variant. I know that I have headroom (though I don't know about helmet room) with a race seat, but I don't even know how that was mounted, so I have a few steps before I get it shipped here. Still, excited to say the least.

Does the car run at all? It'll be a lot cheaper to ship if it can drag its own carcass onto the truck.

Definitely use uship.com I've used them a few times. Having shippers bidding is a good thing.

I believe that it will start. Likely the owners son (my friend) will fly out and be there for the loading.

An alternative to uship is Transport Masters. They are a broker. You tell them what, where, and if it runs. They give you a list of open and enclosed options, including dates, insurance ratings, and costs. You pay TM their fee, they make the initial arrangements, and then you work with the shipper. If you want a quote for comparison this is an option.

You'll need to log in to post.
