Greetings all. I began to pull the motor on the C4 this weekend, and found a significant amount of "gel-like" coolant in a few areas (over flow, pressure tank, a layer in the thermostat). The rad cap goo was brown-ish.

Any idea what could cause this? The engine is getting replaced or rebuilt, and I know I'll need to flush everything pretty good (tips?).

Could this be a result of mixing coolant types? Maybe something more sinister?

Thanks!

Nathan

This is from vague recollection on something I read on one of the Corvette forums - IIRC this can happen if you mix the types of coolant that GM specified for the C4. The later one and the earlier one don't mix and you've just seen what happens.

Of course I could also be completely wrong.

I just spit out my coffee....thanks!

I was afraid of the mixing. It doesn't look "too" bad, so it may have simply been residual old fluid mixed with new.

Thanks all. Nathan

I'd still try to flush the cooling system as well as you can, you don't want that stuff hiding somewhere in the radiator or engine.

You'll need to log in to post.
