It hardly has the cachet an Aston or Maserati does, though.

With a $90k budget, it'd be quite easy to make it have that cachet.
Full suspension, nice set of CCWs, redo all leather inside in pillowtop stuffs, LSx goodness.
MMMMMMMMM...

It would still look like a PRHT MX5 though.
If I'm reading between the line correctly, he wants something that he and his wife look good stepping out of, which is fast and rewarding to drive, and he wants to buy it at a price point that when he chooses to sell, he stands to get out whole or make some money.
I like the Z8 idea; I forgot how attractive they are. I think that they remain outside of his price range, though. It sounds like WM's strategy is to buy low, put as little money into it as possible, and sell high. Spending money on modifications do not make for a profitable sale.
Z8's in good nick are not in my range, more like 110K+.
I can get a 360 spyder for sure but again driving it every day would get old. The few that I have driven are extremely jumpy cars, amazingly the service would not be to bad for the 6-7K I drive a year. Still drive a 430 and you regret the decision immediately. I can get a 355 dirt cheap in coupe, ~50ish in vert 6 speed with recent service. I have done a belt job on one its not to bad but figure 5-6K a year in service cost even if I am doing the work.
Ford GT's are out. Finding a 997 Turbo is out in a vert given my price range.
Take out the convertible aspect and there are a TON of cars that would fit the bill. If we did not live in the motorcycle murder capital then a bike would be fine for me.

Thats always the plan. Though I always do the repairs right and to better then factory spec if its a modification. Exotics with small stories always go cheap, and they tend to be in the hands of people who are desperate. Big stories I just avoid unless its such a huge deal that I cannot pass it up, like below 60% market.
Also pay in cash to avoid the interest and it makes for cheaper cleaner sales. IE 100K in hand or maybe 105 in weeks with some headaches.
Its all in the buy though, I always say that's what makes or breaks a car. If I buy at 80% market I can almost always walk away even after playing for a year or so. 60% or so I make money without fail.
I rarely play in this cost range as it digs into my capital for other things and it seems to be a dead zone, I figured that there had to be tons of mid level exotics in the 80K range, seems that the lower floor is ~100K on the exotics verts, IE gallardo, GTC.

Well, that is really sobering. I would have to agree with your decision on that one.
Maserati Spyder Convertible or GT with the 6-speed (no to the paddle shift F1 autotrans), $30k for a sweet low-mile example. Only problem I've heard of is the pre-O2 sensor cats (built into the header) can disintegrate, annoying but not fatal... May not hold it's value as well as a Ferrari...
Acura NSX... (targa, meets requirements except age)
Dodge Viper SRT10 (meets all requirements)...
Given your pricing requirements of sub-90k you could hypothetically buy all 3 at the same time...
A few more thoughts...
End-of-the-run Acura NSX Targa
Porsche 993 Turbo Vert (are they down that low?)
Ferrari 355 (still the most beautiful modern one) in Targa or Vert
I know it's been dismissed already, but check into the trunk space of the G37 convertible if you want to use it for a weekend trip. I asked the guy at the auto show to open the trunk when the roof was down. I'd be delighted to be proven wrong here, but as far as I could tell you could bring a cheese sandwich with you if it was on thin bread (baguettes wouldn't fit, and sliced tomatoes might be an issue too.) Just a thought.

I LOVE this car, almost perfect in a automatic, drop dead love it. But they are not depreciated out yet. If they follow the 4 door model they have a long long way to go and I don;t want to take a 20-30K hit on a car in a year.
If I could get traction control for the Viper my wife might let me get another one. Going to test drive a GTC at ~95K this weekend see if I like it.
I <3 maseratis, but the depreciation on newer ones seem brutal and would probably put you at a bunch more risk compared to an aston.

Below be coupe data.
Aston stabilize at a floor of 65K on the 07's which is the year to have. I can get a 05/6 first year car for ~52-55K If I really dig and buy PP. Even the early DB7's still bring over 35K which is crazy for a car that is effectively a pretty XJ from the 70-80's.
If I could get a 07 in a good color for about 58-60K with no issues I am going to jump. I will take the couple grand hit in the long run but it would be worth it to finally have a modern Aston. But not a convertible and the R8 is just 15-20K more PP and a LOT better car.

You can't find a Aero 8 for under $90k?
