Is that including accounting for the hard top?
Also: would it be easier/quicker to just track down a replacement engine and swap it in? There's at least one not too far away they're asking $300 for.
After some consideration, I've come to the decision that it's probably just not going to be worth the time, money, and effort for me to try and go back up and get this- there's enough unknowns involved as well as one definite known: the SWMBO is already not happy with my adventure up to get it last week and would not be too thrilled with going back up again- and having another car sitting around needing to be repaired. So, on to find something else...

I tried to look at it yesterday, but never heard back from the sellers via phone though ironically they DID finally respond to my email from several days ago. I asked whether it was drivable with a battery (how the heck do you steal a battery from a Miata anyway? Leave the trunk sitting open???) and their answer was yes but that it keeps fouling a plug and they didn't know if it was a coil problem or bad rings.
I tried to get to see this (http://lexington.craigslist.org/cto/5188969395.html) as well yesterday but the seller wasn't home- and then they dropped the price $100 from where it was midday yesterday. If I had a way to get down there and drive it back (SWMBO works evenings pretty much the whole week) I'd probably be trying to grab that- it looks like it would be a fun little car, and the speedo/odo is likely just a $70 (less if I wanted to be brave and grab one from a junkyard) VSS. Unfortunately at that price it will likely be sold before I can get back down to Harrodsburg to try and buy it.

How sure are you that the head gasket is actually blown? Man, would I love to have a Mariner Blue hardtop for the Barchetta. And then I'd have a spare Miata. And it's only 90 minutes from my house.
The hard part would be explaining to my wife why I need TWO 1991 Mariner Blue Miatas. Do you think she'd believe me if I said "I bought the automatic so you could drive it, honey!"

Well, it blows a ton of white smoke once it warms up- smoke which both myself and the seller's FIL whose house the car was out agreed was definitely coolant. Could it be something else? Possibly. But the odds are high enough of it being the head gasket that it's not a good bet for me any more.
I had the seller down to $1700 before finding out about the head gasket, so if you wanted it you could likely get it down a good bit more from even that with it blowing smoke. I'd be more than happy to send refer the seller to you if you'd like.
