Even better: If you use a cone, or foam filter, take a hair net, and oil it up with either filter oil, motor oil, or the grassroots filter oil, chainsaw - chain oil, put it over the filter, and toss it out at the end of the day/week/month. I use them on my race bike. You wouldn't believe how well they work. On a dusty day, my foam filter still looks clean.
Back in the day, I built up a nice 350 for a 78 malibu. Put an Edelbrock triangular air filter on it. Had a couple of backfires before I got the timing set right. Crossing Alligator Alley, Florida's version of the Autobahn, I kicked it down. At about 120mph I took my foot back out, AND NOTHING CHANGED! Now up to 140 and climbing, I tried to lift the gas pedal, no change. Finally turned off the ignition. Wide open throttle feeds gas into hot mufflers, BANGBANGBANG. Blew them apart. When I got stopped, pulled the air cleaner off, found that a piece of burned foam had jammed the secondaries open. I will never use a foam air cleaner.
That's a little scary. Good thing my car won't go 120 mph!
