Fixed!

You guys should show people that you don't need to spend megabucks to do this stuff! Buy used parts when you can, tune the car yourselves, and you can make the car competitive for not a whole lot of money! DIY FTW!!!

There are so many different build-ups for so many different classes, applications, et cetera that applicability varies widely. But the desire to whip your car into a frenzy on the cheap is classic GRM.
Or another thought: Take two guys with identical cars: say the ubiquitous bugeye wagon. Have one follow a tried-and-true performance route for a given class. Make sure that the other guy is known for being resourceful, and challenge him to get maximum bang for $1,000. When they're done, take each car to the autocross and an open track. Call it The Resourceful Guy vs. Checkbook Builder Challenge.

Fixed that for ya. I'd rather see an article on realistic inexpensive upgrades than some sort of budget-motivated miracle worker who welds up a downpipe out of parts scavenged from the dumpster behind a muffler shop. Talk about how to do things right, not just cheap. They can be the same thing, but not always.
i only do subaru and use them for all purposes. my daily driver is a 98' legacy gt my wife's dd is an 97' legacy outback wagon the project car is a 97' legacy gt wagon with the svx 3.3 boxer and the rally car is a 96' impreza 2door with a 98' forester parts car (forester 2.5, taller forester suspension, foester 5spd, and larger forester rotors ad calipers)NO TURBOS!

That's a bitchin' idea for any kind of car "shoot out." Really, GRM needs to do this.

I'd be curious what sort of payments/who gets what would be expected though if this deal was based on me getting the car back. Its in just dandy shape, motor burns a couple 100mils of oil every couple thousand kms. Let me know how that shipping address is coming along ;)

Seriously, the project cars are typically purchased/leased/borrowed by our staff members. We have bought and accepted gifts of project cars in the past, but we aren't currently looking for anything, our garages are all full.
i have to say a late 90's leagacy wagon would be fun to see what you can do to make one scream..... ok I know, i have a 95 wagon myself i just bought in oct and its the 2nd one i owned....
