I'm pretty sure there will be a bidding war for that one if/when Per decides to sell.
I wish I'd bought the Saab rally car...

Stock longblock seems to be good to roughly 350/400whp.
Trans/Diff/clutch? Remember the aforementioned 700whp car? Yeah.... the clutch was a stage 3 south bend, IIRC. Thats about it. Stock axles, stock trans, stock diff. From what I can tell, EASILY mazdas strongest FWD trans ever, and i'm beginning to suspect that it may well be one of the strongest FWD transmissions, PERIOD. I had an Evo guy look under my car once and he couldn't believe those were the stock axles. He was jealous, and his is a high 10 second car.

There's probably several hp in the current setup for someone who wants to do some tweaking. jgbelteshazzar wrote: that's pretty great power for no more than you've had to do. what's the next step up the ladder with these? That depends. Now that Cobb has cracked the ECU to fully use the AP, there's several options. Next logical step up the ladder would likely be an upgraded CDFP and corn. The injectors on these are SILLY oversized- to the point that the standing dyno record car is over 700whp and is running stock injectors. If you did it right, you could see a reliable 300whp on the stock K04 and a good e85 tune. OR, custom mani and a 3076, for ALL the power. Either is good.
Boost tuning is a lot of fun. They've got it to the point that all the big turbo kids are going back to stock to see what they can wring out of them. There's ALSO rumors of a 997(?) compressor side stock appearing K04 that's supposed to be truly scary. I don't know all the details.... but I want it. Mostly because I don't want to go at my firewall with a hammer.

I understand. Maybe a BRZ? ;-)
The Mazda 3 was one they got right in all the right ways: size, functionality, looks, driving dynamics, interior. I predict it will be a stand-out car ten years from now. And we'll all be wishing we had one. Except you; you'll be wishing you'd kept the one you had. :-)

Dude. Don't even start.
Honestly, I consider it an occupational hazard. At some point, we have to move on to have new things to write about, and answer questions that our readers have. I look back fondly at my E12 5- Series, My 944, my '90 CRX Si, my Vette... yeah, even the Fox Mustang. They all hold a special place in my heart, as will the MS3. It was the first new car I ever bought, as well. Parting will be emotional, which is why I hope it end up in the hands of someone who'll appreciate it properly.
Oh, and I just got home from the dealership with the new ride. Seriously, you're gonna kill me. But I know you're just as curious as I am, too.

I am not.
I want to know if the future is going to suck. As a journalist, and generally curious person, I've become curious enough that I'm willing to spend my own money for a while to find out.
Consider it "Taking one for the team."

That's.... unfortunate. At least you should save enough on gas to put some REALLY silly rubber on it. I suggest Hoosiers.

Clearly, they pay you too much.
JG Pasterjak wrote: It's far worse than that...
Awesome! To be clear, do you think you'll be tossing a bunch of parts/time at it like the MS3 saw or do you intend to just drive it in stock form like 99.9% of other hybrid/ev owners? Curiousity is piqued!

I don't know.
Here's what I do know. We had a Volt press car last week. I was driving it to work Thursday morning, and some dude at Burger King told me all about how my piece of "Obama crap" cost more to charge than to put gas in, caught on fire, broke down after 35 miles, and how most of them were being purchased "by Obama so he can guarantee the UAW vote."
It pissed me off. So I started doing some research, and I found out that the only thing worse than the near-conspiratorial misinformation out there about the Volt was Chevy's utter incompetence to properly market it. I kind of came to the realization that if I really wanted to know anything about the car I'd have to go get one of my own. So I did.
I plan on running at the Sebring PDX in late July. I have no idea whether it will be fun, or the car will go into HAL9000 mode or what. I just know I'm gonna need a looooooong extension cord.

and I'm moving the Volt-scussion to a new thread

As someone who has briefly driven a 400hp+ FWD street car and the MS3... don't even bother.
400hp in a FWD street car is silly, but utterly worthless. Spinning the tires at 80mph is funny, but pointless. Getting that power to the ground just isn't going to happen and with a peaky turbo that will be required, controlling traction with the right peddle is almost impossible. Going with super sticky super fat tires might help, but isn't very practical.
The stock MS3 seems to be near the top end of reasonable streetable FWD power. This car would be a great way to get about the most powerful streetable FWD car you would want to own and drive every day.

This smells like a challenge.
Even with the stock turbo, pump internals, Cobb ap and intake, that power level was at least a little peaky. Mostly a function of the tune trying to spool the turbo early, it was hard to drive like a commuter car when I wanted to just go from work to home at the end of the day.
And consider me in the "wish I'd kept it" camp already.
