Maybe I'm overreacting but, please, for all that is holy can we all be just a little more polite and welcoming to each other?

Thank you.

Well, you could do that. You could also go the other direction an notify someone of a repost like this; i.e. friendly and informative

Were were mourning him over in Off Topic:

Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins Died

Take it easy on Bravenrace. He may still be at #2.

Written words have no inflection. You might have meant (and in fact probably did mean) your comment in a friendly and conversational tone, it's the sort of thing that friends would say to each other. But when written it's hard to divine that and it can come off as dismissive and rude. Certainly you didn't mean it that way but your intent doesn't come through, just the words. You have to go beyond the bare minimum to seem polite in written words. That's why you do not write the same way you speak - when speaking the intonation, body language, everything combine to make it obvious how you mean something. When writing you've pared off all those extra signals that communicate intent.

If you feel compelled to tell him that it's something that's "old news," a more polite way to put it might be "Yeah, I heard about that a while ago and it sucks." Just one way of many that might be interpreted as polite rather than brusque.

Because you come across as not very nice and argumentative. Like you're doing now.

I'm sure it's unintentional and you're actually a quite nice person. Which is why we're offering friendly pointers in how you can succeed in projecting this on the internet.

LOL. Thats funny. I think the "steps" are different for everyone with respect for personality and relation to the person. For instance, I don't mourna loss, I celebratea life. I have very special requests in regards to my death. (I'm not dead yet.) This is to explain my lighter attitude towards death.

You all must think I'm a real jerk then. I honestly didn't and still don't see how my original comment was not welcoming or friendly. I added the "ya know" for that very reason, but I guess I don't hear things the way all of you do. You also indicated that my question about it was "not very nice and argumentative". But I was just asking, that's all. Just to be clear, I'm not arguing that it came across that way, nor am I arguing that my original comment didn't need to be made, or that it couldn't have been nicer or friendlier. I just honestly don't see how either comment was not nice, unwelcoming or argumentative. If that's the way those statements sounded, then I have to assume that the majority of what I write on this forum is also misunderstood. I've never had anyone say something like that to be before unless I was clearly arguing with someone, something I try to do less and less these days. Anyway, sorry.

Note - Nothing I just stated was intended to be anything but sincere.

It really has nothing to do with you but is entirely the phrasing of the post.

Let me put it this way; if you posted a link you thought was interesting and I said, "why did you post that? it's dumb." you would think it was rude, right? Well the inference when someone says something is old news is that the original poster should not have posted it and that they are dumb for having done so. If you had something to add to the conversation then add it, but the "this is old news" posts are not just implying but pretty much stating that the poster should not have made the post. As it was your post didn't add anything anyway, so why bother? Many times I've started to make a post and realized, why am I doing this? Does it help anything or anyone or add in any meaningful way? If not just hit back.

Yep, that pretty much nails it. Again, we're going for a party atmosphere here. As in fun. Sure, it's a party of the smartest, weirdest people you'll ever meet, and not all of them wear pants to the party, but that doesn't mean it can't be a good time.

In reply to bravenrace:

Language is a funny thing. If you said, "Yeah, we were talking about that earlier." it sounds nice than, "thats old news." Certain phrases in certain contexts will sound negative to some/ most/ all people. It all depends.

Regardless if weather it sounded rude, we know you meant nothing negative and no one thinks you're a jerk. You are a respected member of this group, which might I add, my wife complimented the other day because if that fact.

I think the moderators are wanting us to be aware of the possibility of phrases being misunderstood causing train wreck of trolling in turn causing Marjorie to burn down there forums. I've seen the arsonist in her. Its scary.

And maybe why that seems to be a trend with you. So take it in the spirit in which it was intended and learn from this.
