So i got the MK2 from my brother and it runs decent but i know its capable of runnning way better. Since getting it I've been scouring info on an ABA. My brother does dirt track racing with a '90 GTI 16V. And I just realized that the OBD1 ABA has Forged Crank, Rods, Oil Squirters, Dual Valve Springs... Is it possible to do a 2.0 ABA Bottom with a 16V Head? Which pistons would be utilitized or would custom ones be in order. He was an extra ABA identical to the one in my car and has me thinking.... Later on I think I wanna swap my ABA for a G60. I loved that 'Rado's Torque, but not with that slushbox it had... Just my uck he picked up a 16V Passat for $350 with a bad engine... There'd been my tranny swap.... Go Figure!!!

The 16v head onto an ABA is a common swap. Compression ratio with the swap is less than 9:1 IIRC.
Do a search on the vortex - there are a ton of DIY pages there.
Yup, that swap is common for people looking for boost. The opposite, putting an 8v head on a 16v block is done by people looking for some sort of high revving hand grenade 8v.
I'd just swap in a 9a 16v and be happy with it. I had a 1.8 16v (PL) that I rebuilt and used in my GTI and GLI. I also had a 9a in the GLI and the 2 liter engine felt like it had alot more torque. Now I have a supercharged MR2 and I can appreciate why the G60 is so popular, but for the money the VR6 is probably a better idea in the long run.
what pistons would you run?
Stock ABA pistons for low compression. 9a pistons for about 9.5 or so.
Just stick with a 9A. If you're running it NA, you'll need custom pistons in an ABA 16v to match the performance of a stock 9A.

This motor is a BAREBONES motor. Not even setup for cabin heat as I deleted all those hoses. Side of head has a custom blockoff plate with the coolant sensor in it now.

The pistons you would require for an ABA block and 16V head are the euro market ABF pistons. I do beleive Techtonics tuning sells them.
I dont think TT sells them anymore. Or I just got some one that doesnt know what they are doing on the phone.
I have a buddy with an ABF short block that he wants gone BAD..

I forgot about the other combo, 9a short block, PL head, euro intake cam and if you can find one, euro intake manifold. Couple that with a free flowing exhaust and you'll make plenty of power.
What's the draw of an ABF as opposed to a hybrid of the various available 16vs?

ABF has long rods like the ABA and will like to rev better with the long stroke. You can even use 9A pistons with offset rod bushings in an ABA to get stock comp, but few go that route. You can also deck the ABA block 1+mm but then you have to deal with cam offsets.
I personally like stock 9A's but the cheap ones are out of Passats and they tend to be very beat. It's usually cheaper to just build up an ABA hybrid, though some folks are starting to use AEG or 1.8t blocks as a base as they become more common.
