Specifically, this one...
Figure I'd pair it with Adams Polishes pads and compounds...
I've used their pads on a Griot's polisher. Griot's pads are nicer, but if you're gonna risk tearing them up on a rusty patch, might as well go with the cheapy. And then make sure you're not dragging rust particles over good paint.
I've used the old version on several full car polishes, works great. You can use the HF pads if you cut the outer edge so that the velcro part is the same size as the hook/loop part on the polisher, if you don't the HF pads have overlap and will curl over and cause issues.
It probably won't last as long and will almost certainly be louder than a nicer one, but it'll get the job done, especially if it's something you only need occasionally.
I also have the "older" chicago electric one, seems to work just fine. I really should use it more often, my cars are looking a bit dull...
I have the Chicago Electric one as well. Works great! Just use good pads and chemicals and you'll get great results.
My experience with most harbor freight tools is that they do the job fine...just not as well as better known names....except their drill bits...they just suck.
I like mine. It's no rupes but it has made some stunning corrections with proper technique and materials.
I have the older Platinum and it seems that is favored over the newer Bauer. I swapped the backing plate out cause it ate the outter edge of pads up
Is it worth spending the money for a nicer one from Griots or Adams Polishes? They're closer to $200, which I'm happy to spend if the quality difference is there...

Honestly, probably not. It wouldn't surprise me if they were made in the same manufacturing facility! I would just make sure you are using quality pads and polishes. I've done a ton of cars with my HF random orbit and it hasn't turned into a hammer yet.
I need to polish up a few cars. I guess I need to add this to the shopping list.
Where do you recommend I get the pads from?
In reply to Strike_Zero :
Pads use lake country. I stick with Pinnacle or Meguiars for polishes and compounds
irish44j said:I have the old version (without the nice front handle). Seems to work fine, hasn't broken.
What he said.
Adams Polishes is local to me and supports multiple car clubs I'm in, so I'm probably going to use their pads/polishes/clay bar/foam cannon etc
Returned a crappy HF led light yesterday and wanted to use the store credit for the polisher. Well, they're all out of stock in basically all their Denver area stores plus the warehouse.
Was going to order it online but I might as well wait until spring, not gonna use it for awhile the way the snow keeps rolling in every week here.
There is a YouTube channel by guy in Dallas who details and does paint correction. He occasionally does product comparisons and the short of it is the HF is a nice piece, just change the backing plate. Can confirm, the HF plate is a bit wobbly but I sourced a nice one from Amazon for cheap. Problem solved.
