A good buy or stay away? Scott
Some good info on HF guns here. Quite a few people I know use these regularly and there's ways to make them better by swapping parts, this is the shortest most concise breakdown I could find.
Yeah, I like mine. I've got like 5 HF spray guns of various sizes and configurations and the gravity fed HVLP one I got for ten bucks (~12+ now on super sale, but what's 20% inflation that we don't have?) is my favorite spray gun.
The purple one did great shooting gelcoat. Had a little orange peal but it gave a better finish than brushing or rolling that stuff on did. I was also using too small of a nozzle for it and just have the needle opened all the way up and the pressure cranked to get it to spray someone what decent which is why there was orange peal. Also, get the warranty. Dont bother cleaning it at the end of the day (just when you first get it and between coats), just bring it back and say it broke and they'll give you a new one.

Unless you live next door to the HF does this really make cense?

Well HF IS like 2 miles down the road from where I was doing the gel coat. And cleaning all that gelcoat out of the gun was costing as much in acetone as just buying a new gun.
I use 'em for primer guns and they work great for that. I bought a blue-handled one 10 years ago that I recently tossed because I guess I didn't clean it well enough and it got gunked up. I recently bought this kit:

The quality is obviously much better than the gun I threw away and you get some useful tools and a different sized needle, as well as the small gun.
I still just use the HF one for primer since I have a Devilbiss Finishline II for color. It is a good idea to keep separate guns because primer is so tough to clean out of a gun. The Finishline II is another step above the HF in terms of quality and design, but I think the HF gun would certainly suffice for color, as well. I might find myself using the small gun for shooting touch-up color.
