My search turned up nothing though I know there has been at least an ev for the challenge. Can anyone help point me to relevant threads or tell me about your own attempt if it isn't already posted. I would be really surprised if someone here hasn't at least tried it.
The Challenge EV you're thinking about is probably Nashco's AWD Fiero Hybrid. Sort of a grassroots predecessor to the Porsche 918

I think there was a fiero that used an ev1 battery a few years back.
Might have even been hybrid or dual engined...
Edit: grrr, beaten with an even better answer.
Friend of mine converted a Ford Aspire. He spent something like $8000.00 on Chinese batteries but he commutes to work everyday. It's about 50 km each way. There is an ev charging station but the school(hes a teacher)wont let him use it because they are afraid his car will burn the school down.
But anyway he does the 100 k rounder every day no problem.
Yep. The fiero was the one I remembered. Though I guess I had forgotten it was dual power. Has anyone done a full ev conversion on a standard car? There are lots of forum sites but opinions are all over the board on what works and doesn't. I trust GRM more than an unknown ev site
I can't remember any done by a GRMer, but plenty of full ICE-to-pure EV conversions have been done by others with great success. The only real hard part is affording batteries - and of course you'll need more electrical knowledge than you usually would for working on a car.
