I'm looking for something to better keep me in the seat at slaloms and lapping days. I slide around and don't fit in my E36 seat, so have been planning to replace it. Probably with a pair of E46 M3 seats I found locally that are cheap.
I'd love to have a Schroth quick fit or similar and a proper seat, but that's not in the budget. Has anyone tried using a torso harness (along with the factory belt) like in the link? Seems kinda hokey. Just a strap that wraps around you and the seat, but was wondering if it would help. I don't really want to buy a cheap 4 or pt harness either, because they aren't generally legal per Canadian lapping and autocross rules.
harness
Back in the day we used to call that an autocross belt. I used one when I was first getting into autocrossing, and they can help a little with stabilizing your body so you can just use the steering wheel for steering. Better than nothing but no where near as effective as a harness.

tried locking the belt then moving your seat forward until it's good & tight?
In reply to oldtin:
Yeah, it keeps releasing on me. Plus I'm into the headliner, so it's hard to get the seat right that way. The seat motor/gears don't seem to like it much either.
In reply to bravenrace: I didn't think it would be great, but that it'd be better. Our rules require a harness to be FIA/SFI, current, and to be properly installed (of course) which is expensive and more difficult
I use one that I made with old camera straps I had laying around. Keeps me from having to brace so much. I like it.

before I went with a CG Lock, I used one … it did exactly what I wanted it to do
if you haven't already bought one … send me $5 (which should cover shipping) and it's yours
PM me if you're interested

It will definitely be an improvement.
You can make your own that is infinitely adjustable.

In reply to wbjones:
Thanks, but I'm in Canada, so I doubt $5 will cover.
I was thinking about using a ratchet strap before I saw these things. Can probably make my own from crap at princess auto. Or a belt from the big & tall store.
I had one of the VW Golfs that was never equipped with a lap belt. To make it RallyCross legal, I installed a $20 NAPA universal lap belt.
I could cinch that sucker down TIGHT. It was better than a 5 point harness as far as keeping me from moving around.
In reply to Knurled:
Hmm, that's a good idea. I could probably just use the middle rear belt I already have on the car!

I had looked at your profile and didn't see an address when I posted that … wonder what a ~8oz package would cost to sent to the frozen north ![](/media/img/icons/smilies/wink-18.png)
Years back, this item was made popular by and sold by Dick Turner, Autocross instructor. It was then known as The Dick Strap.

Consult your rules but in SCCA, this strap is considered to be supplemental upper body restraint and if used in an open top car, proper roll bar will be required. If used in a solid roof car then no roll bar required.
I have used in the past and liked. Somewhat challenging to quickly and neatly get around yourself and the entire front seat at the same time. Some sort of "belt loops" added to the seat would make it easier.
I've used one, but only with a safe word.

if you look closely at the very end of the OP, there was a link to that very thing..
In reply to novaderrik:
There was, but he also added the funny dick strap story, and let me know that it worked. So I'm good with that. I should post pic instead of hiding link.
In reply to Knurled: Not sure if making fun of me for missing something obvious, or making light hearted joke. I'll assume the second one :P When I get a chance to try and rig that up I'll post some pics.
