Plus a likely FCA engine swap...
I am intrigued, but will be waiting for real information from FCA. Honestly, I would hope they can do better with the body than what these spy photos seem to indicate.
Looks nice, I wonder how much more $$$ it will be than a Miata. Miata already out of my price range.
This is pretty limp wristed badge engineering. Is British Leyland management somehow running FCA now? I mean, look at the interior shots from the Car & Driver link. I can't imagine trying to rationalize purchasing one of these unless there's some amazing powertrain developments in store.

I was being silly btw. The exterior looks quite uninspired IMO...Like, phoned in from 2005.
I thought it looked like an aston body kit on a miata.
Rumored to have the 1.4T in the base trim and a 1.7 from the 4C in the abarth.
My personal preference would be the 1.4T in the MX5 body. Thats assuming the 1.4T is easily hopped up, any 500 abarth owners care to chime in about upgrades for the 1.4T?
I liked the concepts of the Alfa version of the miata a few years ago.
This one I will wait to judge until the actual photos come out. But it's not likely to be on my short list of new cars....

Oh, they can be hopped up.....if they can capture the abarth's sound however, whatever it looks like would be worth it over the miata.
Meh, not doing a whole lot for me. The Miata looks better in person to me than in pictures. Maybe the 124 will too.
The only offensive part is the chrome windshield surround. Other than that it's just a different flavor of the same delicious food, I'm cool with it.
I'm thinking this opens up the possibility of the alfa motors being swapped into miatas in a few years time as a type of "junkyard upgrade"
having owned many many many 124 spiders... they are definitely harkening back to the original 124 spider. You can see many of the lines in profile from the original, from the scooped headlights, squared and bisected grill, to the "kickup" in the rear fender to the sharper creases towards the rear. It is definitely supposed to be a 30 year newer "evolution" of the original.
I don't hate it.. but I can't say I like it either. I need to see it in person to make that call
