Given this groups impressive knowledge of oddball cars nobody has ever heard about, I figured you could provide some great suggestions for me. Here's my conundrum: I have an engine looking for a car. 32v, all aluminum 4.2 liter v8 from an Audi A8, 300hp/300ft-lb. I haven't bought a scale yet, but it's under 400 pounds. I bought it a few years ago for a car I no longer have and now need to put it into something else. Rough measurements show that it will fit into a Miata, a plasma cutter and welder applied to the front of the oil pan will likely be necessary to clear the steering rack. I like the Miata idea due to cost and the fact that I love the underpowered stock one I have, but I'm open to other inexpensive suggestions of lightweight small RWD cars.

Any ideas?

In reply to Frank:

Welder + plasma cutter = 1.2:1 scale Locost = street legal fun + autocross/track day fun = lots of fun.

I can't think of any reason why Miata is not the answer here.

I've seen a few of these into older Audis, and it's pretty awesome.

Doesn't fulfill the RWD requirement, but it'd be hard to argue with the winsauce of this motor in an old Audi 90 Quattro. Bonus points for culvert-sized straight pipes and cherry bombs.

It'll go into a 944 pretty easily according to our local rally guru who has researched this very idea....

VW Fox, any audi that it will fit without too much cutting, lotus esprit (someone did one that looked nice), 944, etc. I would say put it in something that it will take less bolting than cutting, it seems like lots of A8s get cut up for the engine, then they end up being passed around to participate in unfinished projects for years. My choise would be a 4000 sedan though, or a quantum syncro.

i would have to say to put it mid engined in a pinto wagon. RWD, sleeper, light, plenty of chassis support, and just odd.

I have learned about some neat cars I've never seen! This is just what I was after.

I previously built a very fast Quantum Syncro so I'm leaning away from another or an Audi, they're great but I just want something different.

Box flares would be excellent, but a Miata wouldn't fit that criteria. Starion? I love the fenders!
