I believe you are from teh Pittsburgh area. Did you find a good dealer?
I hate the dealers in this area.
They always want to sell me something I DONT want.
Me: Do you have a 4wd 4 door full size V8 pickup for less than 35K (used)?
Dealer: Yep! Check out this Ford Ranger! Check out this Nissan Xterra! Check out this Cavalier!
WTF?

why is it important for a salesman to "know their stuff?" Who the F cares? What are you guys doing, going in there and giving out some kind of car quiz? Comparing who has more car knowledge, you are some dip$hitt sales moron? Look, fuhgetaboutit, you can't want a car this badly, go buy something else.
I don't care about the salesman's general car knowledge but they should be able to demonstrate the features on the cars they sell. After seven years selling the same line of cars I expect the salesman to know how to fold down the back seats.
You're joking right? Seriously, ask yourself, why is it important for you that the salesman know how to do something that a.) you will figure out in about 5 seconds after looking at the vehicle b.) if a.) doesn't work out, you will figure it out after 10 seconds after looking at the manual? Is this part of some kind of wish to have a complete buyer experience? Anytime I've ever walked into a dealer, the answer has been for me c.) I gladly know more than the dopey car salesman about the specs / features that matter to me before i walk into the place thanks to reading numerous car magazines. I'd rather enter into a negotiation knowing more than the other party.
Why is it so hard to find a salesman in a polyester plaid suit these days?
Sounds a lot like Subaru dealer's in the DC area. I walked into a few dealers and because my wife and I look so young we got zero help. The Subaru website quoted a base 2014 Forester for $230 a month with $2000 down for a lease. We discussed this with a few dealers and they all came back with absurd $400/month price. I blew a gasket every time because I pay less than that for a Civic Si fully loaded, financed, and I put zero down. The Forester costs $4k less in base trim. I finally went out to WV to buy one as I found a dealer that honored the lease terms and after about $3500 down to include tax and tag (had a title) we were out the door with a brand new car for the wife.
And whomever said Vegas is the worst....try buying a car in Key West. Live on an island, small inventory, and the only way to go is Northeast to Miami where well....you have to deal with the slimebag car salesman of that city.
I've bought 4 new vehicles and have never had the problems most of you complain about.
I see a theme here.........
I hate buying new cars.
That said, what I do is to figure out what I want before I shop. Then I call most of the dealers in the area with my specs (I want Car X, with this feature and that option, etc...). I tell them I'm going to buy this car in the next two weeks and ask what their bottom dollar, out-the-door price is. The lowest answer gets a visit with the salesman's name and price quoted and then the fun begins. (You know: "oh, do you want the speedy-lifetime-no wax anti-bug spray? How about our never-ending painless dent removal warrantee? etc, etc...). This back-and-forth could take hours...
I hate buying new cars.
I find them ignoring you to be completely different than my experience. I stopped by a Volvo dealer back in February to look over an XC-70 to see if it met requirements. I didn't think it did with enough value to trade my current car so... we parted ways.
Now they are stalking me. Not a week goes by that I don't get email or a follow-up call from some woman who works there asking how my search is going. I actually had to block the number in MyVerizon because lying and telling them I bought a different car didn't stop them.
Same here. We looked at an Explorer nearly 2 years ago and I still get monthly messages from the local Ford dealer asking if we are still interested. Of course I screwed up by pricing a Focus a few months ago and inquiring about a trade in through ford.com. I finally blocked the emails after unsubscribe didn't work.
Sounds like you're shopping at the wrong dealership...

I normally buy only used cars, but under certain circumstances have bought new - twice in the last 5 years in fact. The first was a car that was rare enough that I didn't want to risk never finding exactly what I wanted on the used market - about 260 made and only 46 came to Canada. The second was a car for my wife, bought when they were moving out last years models to make room for the new models and offered such big discounts that you could buy new for several thousand less than the people that were selling the same year used were asking.
I always assume that the salesman is an annoyance and knows less than I do. I also have my own quirks - like refusing to pay any 'documentation fee' (had to get up and walk before they relented on that one).
Both times I ended up with what I wanted at a price I was OK with, albeit not without typical dealer annoyances. One was when I showed up to pick up my new car and they had plastered dealer stickers on it. I refused to pay for it and take it until they removed them. Also the usual dance of "I have to talk to my sales manager". Response "Good, tell him goodbye for us" Annoying.
FWIW, Mazda was a lot less painful than GM. Still not something I'd want to go through every few years - on par with having your teeth drilled for fillings, more or less.
