Man, if you ever needed an illustration (har har) as to why the LS gets put in everything. 7" narrower!

Wonder what they weigh... The Challenger appears to be roughly 5-600 lbs heavier than a Camaro or Mustang, respectively (totally going with the first curb weights I found, lightest for each model's given range, same source for all three, FWIW; IOW, not-definitive). No idea whether this engine is proportionally mass-intensive compared to the Ford/Chevy offerings.

For some reason the first place I want one is in a K car. . .   Convertible. .. .. .   with the wood grain plastic stuff on the sides.. . .    I think I may need professional help. . .

This to be exact. . ..

Cool news

So, who is gonna be the first GRMer to put a $20K plus crate engine in a $800 car?

You give me the $20k engine, and I'll be the first. wink

Closest we've come is a $10k crate in a $400 car.

Just for specificity, I asked for ANY of their crate engines.  They had none of them.  5.7L, 6.4L nor the Hellcat was available.  It's a little more than an oversight a year after introduction.

For the GM data you need to go through SEMA. At least, for the really yummy stuff like CAD models.

I was a SEMA intern for a couple of years.  I miss going.  Ford was just phone call when I asked for the EcoBoost info I posted a year ago in one of the other threads.

I don't miss the show, but the organization is very useful otherwise.

Not that I will ever own a car with an engine anywhere near as powerful as the hellcat, but I don't quite get the appeal.  You can purchase get a LT4 with 640hp for $16k from GMPP.  Do we really believe the Hellcat's 707hp engine is better built or better suited to it's task?  Iron block anyone?  Do we really think the LT4 would be more stressed if tuned for 10% more power?

Now, would you call that a pallet engine instead of a crate engine?

Actually, that's often called a pallet donor.

Big three engine brands are a religious thing. I've heard from a lot of people who love the idea of our V8 Miatas but can't contemplate the idea of owning a car powered by a Chevy motor. It's stupid, but there you go. There are people who will only use a Hellcat instead of a Ford or GM product because it's Mopar, that's just how it is.

Tucking all of your valvetrain more or less inside the width of the block will allow that for you.

Exhaust will make it wider of course, but that is width that can be "user defined".  (Me, I like the 180 degree header over the passenger side of the trans idea, but that requires you get rid of a lot of in-cabin real estate)

Well, yeah.  The biggest thing I don't like about the LS engines is that they are Chevys.  Granted, they are the best Ford Clevelands that anyone ever made, but they have bow ties on them and not blue ovals, and I'd feel slimy and wrong to have one in a personal vehicle.

Say, did you know that there's a company casting new aluminum Cleveland blocks?  And there's all sorts of aftermarket "3v" Cleveland heads (closed chambers like a 4v, not-ridiculous ports like a 2v) available?  It's actually making the price of rare original parts drop down precipitously.  I saw a set of complete closed chamber 4v heads end an auction at $500 with no bidders.

I'm okay with all of this as long as we start referring to them as the "hellcrate" motor.

Serious question... what kind of transmission options are there?

At least with the Chevy and Ford engines, you have acres of different automatic and manual transmissions you can use, from 2-speed autos to NASCAR takeouts.

I ask seriously, because $22k is actually a pretty good deal for 700hp relative to, say, putting together a traditional big-block *whatever*.  And definitely one hell of a lot more reliable.  Valvetrain life in a naturally aspirated V8 of that power in any displacement is frighteningly short.  The kind of camshafts you need to support the airflow to make that kind of power will beat the hell out of the lifters and rockers, and valvespring life isn't the best either.

So what I am getting at, is I may find myself being asked to put together a BOM for swapping a Hellcrate (nice name, I'm appropriating it) into something in the not terribly distant future...
