Long time listener, first time caller!

Can I make a special request for Helmet Day?  Having just gone through the process of buying a helmet.... Can you (GRM) do a comprehensive helmet review?  If not, can we (the forum) put together some hands-on experience to share about the helmets that are available?

Some primary things that are missing from nearly every helmet review currently:

Modularity - can I remove the liners and wash them? Are there cheek pads that swap around for comfort and fit?

Weight - every company brags about the weight - then doesn't publish it! How much does a "Large" - whatever that means for that company- weigh?

Shape - I'm going to lean on my motorcycle helmet experience on this one - every company is tailored to a different head shape, some are round, some are oval, some are flatter - What shape does each mfg fit best?

Design - Does the aero lip do anything?  Is forced air effective/worthwhile? What do the ugly wrinkles on the helmet's forehead do?

In my research of the right helmet, I found that the magazine reviews are just snippets from MFG's websites - "This helmet is lightweight composite" - but no meaningful information to back it up (like the actual weight of the helmet??).  Helmet retailers "what helmet to buy" just tell you how awesome their most expensive helmet is (yes, I know that the Stilo STFN ZERO is extra light and extra awesome - but what makes it $4000 better than the next helmet?)  Budget helmet reviews (I'm looking at you Amazon) are infiltrated by spam reviews "This helmet is awesome! It fits when I wore it around once!" or simply non-existent (for all the helmets that aren't on Amazon)

Take a look at ski reviews in ski magazines - they do incredibly comprehensive tests every year, with quantifiable data on dozens of skis across a wide variety of aspects of the skis.  In the racing world, this realistically only needs to happen every 2-3 years, and 5 years minimum when SNELL updates.

Anyway - its all just something that I've been amazed doesn't exist already.  Maybe that can change?   /hot take

We did this a few years ago but, yeah, time to move that to the front burner.

I just want a quiet one, under $300 for hte bike that is bluetooth ready. The windnoise in my poor old HJC is just deafening.

A description of the head shape that the helmet is designed/intended to fit would be useful as well. I'm a long oval & it is difficult to find head shape info and it also seems the number of helmet models for long oval shaped heads has declined significantly.

I need a new lid for my prodigiously gigantic head. I'm afraid my old shoei that I had to order has gone the way of the dodo. I'd like an sa lid, while I was at it.

Does any manufacturer make a modern helmet that appears old school? Like Bell's Bullitt motorcycle helmet but for cars?

I just wish some of the more interesting designs available for DOT helmets could be made available for the SA helmets.

For bikes I know will only put a 6D Helmet on my head.  Not because they help me out with discounts but cause they have saved me from two concussions.  Having had 3 confirmed and 1 more suspected I can't afford anymore.

When I was dwarf car racing  I wore a Bell M2 Forced air.  At 1st I made my own blower unit using a 4" brake duct blower ($24) (really a bilge blower for a boat but sold many places as brake duct) Mounted / Duct tapped to that I cut a 2 litter soda bottle and to where the cap screwed on i used a dish washer hose from Home Dump ($10) it had nice flexible but reinforced hose with rubber connectors that fit the helmet and the bottle top.  It worked great!  When i found some $$ i bought a "High Volume" parker pumper unit.... all it did was lighten my wallet... less air then the home made unit.

Forced air is the way to go even without a cooler just the air you'll feel better.  :)

In reply to Appleseed :

Not likely. That eyeport and weak chin bar would never pass the current Snell standard.

But it does pass ECE, DOT, and SHARP. And it's a moto helmet which is built and tested different than auto, so there is probably not much corrolation between the two.
