to all of you brilliant folks out there, I ask your infinite wisdom.
My brother pulled apart his trucks transmission, and this piece was sitting in the bottom of the pan.
What is this piece?

When the manufacture the transmission, they put a plug in the dipstick tube hole.
When the trans gets to the assembly line and they install the dipstick tube, they just pop it in and that piece just goes into the pan. It hurts nothing to be down in there.
No, you'll find it in all Ford transmissions that have never been serviced. Probably explains why you have to pull it apart now?
You'd be surprised how many people see it in the pan, can't figure out what it is, and then put it back in the pan for the next guy to worry about.
MAKE sure he uses the right trans fluid!! The wrong fluild with kill the solinod pack fast and or lead to the dreaded shutter shifting problem. What year trans? What model? A4od, 4R70W ect. Drain the converter while your there or your wasting your time.
It is an 84 F150 with a 302...
I will admit to knowing nothing about automatic transmissions and say that it says Ford Metric Transmission on the pan...does that help?
