So the ABS has been non functioning on the '97 Mustang GT as long as I've known the car. I've tried a couple different scan tools and ForScan and none of them seem to want to communicate with the ABS module. Is there some other way to pull an ABS code or is there a common enough problem with the ABS on these that I could check for in other ways?
Is the ABS module fuse popped?
Is the big connector at the ABS module connected?
Ok I'm gonna feel really dumb if either of those are the answer. I'll check when I get out of class since I drove this car today.
make sure there arent metal particles on the tone ring or sensor. beyond that, you are on the right track.
ForSCAN should be able to read the module. It works just fine reading ABS codes in the various New Edge Mustangs I've used it on.
The module itself could be disconnected or bad.
From my experience with 90's Fords, it is more likely the wiring from the ABS sensor or the ABS sensor itself that has gone bad and not the ABS module itself. A decent OBDII tool with ABS capability should be able to get you the code to narrow down with wheel to look at.
If i remember correctly, there is a way to measure resistance (?) through the ABS sensor by unplugging the connector and using a DVM. If the resistance is above a certain threshold, it indicates the sensor is bad. I dont recall the specifics, but the procedure should be out there on the internet.
Rockauto has ABS sensors for ~ $50 if thats what it turns out to be.
Ok so the fuse isn't popped and the module does seem to be plugged in. Digging deeper into it tomorrow. Hoping to find why the module doesn't seem to be wanting to communicate in manner other than an ABS light.
