OK, so I'm playing Dollar Store Smokey Yunick here.
I've been running the MR2 in SCCA CT-B this year and I'm comfortable in the class as I'm running about mid-pack. Problem is that I would need to add some suspension work to get the handling up to snuff and any suspension work would put me in CT-A where I'd go back from mid-pack to mobile chicane. According to the handy calculator on our region's SCCA website, the problem is that the MR2 has a hairdryer bolted to the engine.
As I've never really warmed that much to the MR2 I'm thinking about alternatives that would allow me to remain in this class, but allow me to take full advantage of suspension mods, aero and ideally, slicks.
An NA or NB answer without the later VVT motor would, but I don't fit them properly.
Ideally I'd like to also take advantage of the 'vintage' modifier, which would suggest something MY 1989 or older. One thing that's important is a decent aftermarket, I don't have the time these days to scour Yahoo auctions Japan and have used parts overnighted from there...
Poking around the Interwebz suggests the following cars might meet the requirements:
- FC RX7, as long as I stay NA. Downside - very limited aftermarket these days
- AE86. These seem to come up in just about every "what car" thread of mine, I wonder why.
- KP61 Starlet, but they're marginal for the class if I want to swap a 4AGE in
- BMW 2002, although I'd have to work hard to keep that out of CT-D
Then there's an affordable car that's had some design input from that Gordon Murray and would basically guarantee me a 2nd place trophy[1] if I can modify it enough to stay in CT-C. All I have to do is find a decent one and have it shipped over from the UK:
[1] Our local CT-C class currently only has a single entry .
